aussietmrail
Quote I think you directed that to me, if not, sorry Thomas! Firstly, 4 meters is "only" about 13 feet or so and secondly, we usually only operate with single locos but do occasionally double head just for fun though rather than because we have to. Hi John, I actually did mean it to go to you , commenting on your friends grade of .2.5 percent , my passenger trains are usually 18 cars long with two locos up front, I could ad on 10 more will see, freight trains like spine car with trailers on will be 20 cars long 2will need three locos .. My blocks are 0ver 20 feet in length, have a bridge that is 14 feet in length, I be updating those pics in the work bench thread where I have a post on bridges. ThomasI
Hello everybody! I wish you a happy new year! My second parking station has been tackled and the entrance is already taking shape. It will have 16 tracks plus 2 bypass tracks. mick
Happy New Year Thomas! That's looking very impressive. You must have a wonderful collection of stock to need such an expansive storage area - and this is the second one! I quite like the term 'parking station' by the way - it's not something we hear too often.

The term fiddle yard is also used in German, but it refers to a track system outside the landscaped area of a layout where trains can be rearranged by lifting them off the track and replacing them. This differs from the "Schattenbahnhof" (literally "shadow station") which is only used to park trains and is usually found in the underground of the layout. I actually don't have a suitable term in English for "Schattenbahnhof". Regards Thomas

Clay Mills Junction
I hope you get them. Lots of places have stopped selling to the EU, including Hornby.
Riddles
Hornby's cancellation of delivery to EU is not intended to be permanent, but who knows how long it will take to resolve the problems?

Delivery to EU isn't the problem, Hatton's, Osborns etc. handle it great. But the stuff I need is simply not in stock. Also not with sellers inside the EU. ☹️

Bjoern
Dear Thomas, since a lot of Years I thought I'm very alone with the idea to bring HO scale trains outside. I searched Youtube and the www to all this topics, with some small results. Yesterday Evening I found your link and got here and I'm totally impressed by your work. This is absolutely amazing... Since 2 Years I got back to my childhood hobby (where I gone also outside with Roco Line/ but just for 1 day) and since that date I'm testing with DCC and Roco Line all over my house (but so far just inside). Some rails of RocoLine are stationed since over a year in my garden for testing for the weather influences. First of all I want to build some parts inside to get more in detail with all the electronic and computer stuff to know what is the goal when I wanna go outside. Your explanations and experiences here are helping me... (I cannot put in words how much) Keep it up and I'm looking forward to see more. Kind regards Bjoern 4

aussietmrail
Hi Thomas, wow just mind blowing18 tracks what a huge undertaking that was , not finished huge staging yard posted Jan24th , hate to think how many you be using and can't wait to see trains coming and going, my staging yard is only 5 tracks wide . How are you going survived the winter, it is our turn and a the first week of autumn is=t is very cloudy , unstable humid and storms predicted, wont get much of a chance today getting down to the shed , keep the good work up and pics flowing. Great idea having an access step over the track, I could do the same be a bit higher . Tony from wet down under.

Tony from wet down under. It is also wet and cool in Germany again. ☹️ But I think I found the best translation for 'Schattenbahnhof' now, stabling yard or invisible stabling yard seems most correct. Andrew
As has been pointed out before, the normal term used by railway modellers, in British English at least, is fiddle yard. But I doubt you can find such a specialised term in any dictionary.

In a stabling yard you do not 'fiddle' with your trains, often that is not possible there.
roddy
Exactly correct Thomas. Staging and Stabling yards are purely storage of complete trains. Fiddle yard is for making and breaking etc. Does Geigenhof, cover the term properly?

To fiddle on the other side translates to "fiedeln" what means 'to play the violin' and to "fummeln" what means 'to fumble' but also 'to grope'. So fiddle yard in German would be Fummelbahnhof. But because this can also be understood as 'grope yard' 😬, i.e. it is very ambiguous in German, the English term is used.
ThomasI
Stabling yard # 2 is finished so far, only the last points still have to be connected to the (still missing) decoder. And then next to # 2 there will also be the stabling yard # 3, which will have 9 tracks with a usable length of about 1500mm for push-pull trains and railcars. But two points are still missing for the beginning with #3. Edited March 16, 2021 by ThomasI
