Weathing powders, buy or make your own?

I brought the basic items to do some weathering, but there was only 1 weathing powder in the shop.

In your experience is it worth me hunting down £4 a pot powders, or will home made soft pastel powder work?

I've always just used artist chalk. I keep a piece of sand paper handy and just scrape up what I need for whatever color.

I also do not fix the chalk on models with any kind of spray. I find that fixing it weakens the effect and I can always add more later if it comes off from handling the model.

Even some of the most gaudy colors can be blended with other colors to make what you want as well.

SWMBO has boxes and boxes of artists pastels so I don't have that problem ( don't let her know I said that) . you could try "the works" as they often have cheap artists materials they're on line as well.
