Baimor
Call me stupid but does 4 mm mean 4 mm to the foot?? I would like to have a go at scratchbuilding some buildings and need know how large to make them to keep them in scale. Thanks. Mark
TheQ
YES OO or more properly 00 is 4mm to the foot, 1/76, it runs on HO 3.5mm to the foot track (16.5mm apart). There are many modeling scales /gauges in railways below is a list of the smaller gauges, with many intermediate sizes left out. Most have more accurate versions as well, I've listed EM and P4/S4 which are the more accurate versions of 4mm, 4ft 8.5in "00" gauge G Gauge, Garden Gauge, this is also when used with 10mm to the ft modeling, approximately Gauge 1 Variable scale 45mm gauge O Gauge, Zero Gauge , AKA Oh Gauge 7mm to 1ft, 1:43.5 scale 32mm gauge OO Gauge, Zero Zero Gauge, aka OhOh gauge 4mm to 1 ft, 1:76 scale 16.5mm gauge OO is by far the most popular gauge, although the gauge is 15% under scale.OO Gauge EM gauge, Eighteen Millimeter 4mm to 1 ft, 1:76 scale 18.2mm gauge Eighteen Millimeter is 1950's -ish attempt at a more accurate 4mm Scale P4/S4 , Prototype 4, Scale 4. 4mm to 1 ft, 1:76 scale 18.83mm gauge P$4/S4 is 1970's -ish attempt at a more accurate 4mm Scale (I won't go into the politics of the P$/S4 Designation). I doubt there would be many people that could build a successful outdoor railway to this accuracy. HO Gauge, Half Zero Gauge 3.5mm to 1ft, 1:87 scale 16.5mm gauge The same gauge as OO, but with the smaller scale the gauge is in correct proportion to the scale. TT Gauge, Table Top gauge 3mm to 1 ft, 1:120 scale, 1/10th inch to the ft 12,13.4 or 14mm Gauge. at one time there was commercial track and stock available for this scale. N Gauge, Nine Millimeters Gauge 2mm to 1ft, 1:148 scale 9mm gauge Twice as small as HO gauge Z gauge ( because the first manufacturer thought this would be the last smaller scale) 1.65mm Ft 6mm Gauge T Gauge, Three mm track gauge 1mm to the ft, 1:450, 1/480 3mm Gauge is a Japanese scale running on 3mm track, much of real Japanese track is 3ft not 4ft 8.5 inches, So in Japan this is 1mm ft. Baimor
Wow!! Thanks for that Q! Without sounding stupid I often wondered what all the different gauges were. I know now how to build things to scale ( I hope !!)
