Winter plans

Well, we seem to be in the frosty stage of garden railway modeling. I see very few posts on here. So what's on the books for the winter months? Plans, reading about railways, just sitting back and relaxing inside?

I want to make some major improvements to my Northern Belle train. Close couplings on the coaches, interior improvements including lights and I'll be buying some exterior detailing packs. Should take a long time on a nine coach train.

It's gone very quiet of late hasn't it? The time of year has a lot to do with the lack of forum activity, especially from UK based modellers, but for what it's worth here are some of the things I'd like to do over the coming months.

Firstly I need to cut back on my loco and rolling stock collection. I've already reduced the numbers by a fair bit but there's still a lot further to go. I'm not in a great hurry but I feel now is the time to thin them out as it has got a bit out of hand and recent events have made me realise that material things aren't really so important. I CAN let them go! Selling them on is time consuming but it needs to be done.

I seem to have settled on a Scottish theme for the garden layout but will also be adhering to my initial preserved line idea so outdoor running will be an alternating mixture of both depending on mood. I have a lot of weathering and load construction to do, mainly with the OTA timber wagons I recently purchased. I have also to decide which loco's will be required and upgrade where necessary with DCC sound chips.

In addition, I want to construct a small indoor layout that I can use all year round or perhaps I should return to the indoor setup, currently standing out in the shed, which I started building when we lived in Selby and that never got finished. Hopefully we can have a few years without any further tragic events that bring our plans to an abrupt halt.

I keep walking outside and just staring at the layout. I then plan and plan... Then I return inside. ha ha

My winter plans...

Hopefully, finalise my divorce and complete the sale of my house. Then I will have plenty of time to daydream about how I might be able to once again enjoy this wonderful hobby of ours! (Unlikely to have a new permanent abode for a while, so daydreaming is all im gonna be able to do..)

Well I posted that statement above on the 30th November and our 'tragedy free' period lasted only 3 weeks. A funeral on the 2nd January 2015 wasn't in our plans and certainly wasn't something we were anticipating. You can never take anything for granted so go out and do all the things you want to do and share your time with all those who are closest to you. Make the best of every single day.

Sorry to hear that Mick. We spent the new year in Cumbria with a friend who is a "First Responder". On the Sunday after Christmas she was called out to someone in her village and despite all her efforts (and that of air ambulance crew who arrived) the neighbour was found to have a brain bleed and died of an aneurism two days later. It made us think, so we've just booked to cross Canada by train. As someone once said, shrouds have no pockets. Really must get some work done in the garden this spring though.

Hi Mick and Riddles, sorry to hear about your loss in your family Mick deepest sympathy from OZ, know how you feel, my step dad died Christmas night 2013, that ended our Christmas get togethers at mums house, she doesn't have them now.

Riddles, that person was lucky to last two days after a brain aneurism rupture, I shouldn't be here 2006 I had an aneurism rupture in the stomach, lucky for me it wasn't close to the main artery, but I do have 5 more aneurisms on the go the specialist is looking after two that are fatal if they rupture. The second stomach aneurism is above the one that ruptured closer to the main artery, is fatal if it ruptures, slow growing, not far off from surgery., has to be a just over 2cm's before surgery, not far off.

The specialist is keeping a close eye on have a cat scan every year, got an appointment in March, there is another one just being found in an arch near the ascending aorta above the heart already had one repaired above the heart, have to face open heart surgery again in a few years.

On top off all that have a disabled son that is 24/7 care and on life support, he is pretty happy, we give him what he wants, lucky we have one child, he loves computers and has a big gamming computer, heavy gamer, $4,500 computer tower, wants the latest graphic card that is coming out soon, has MD and in a electric wheel chair to get around in .

Aiming to get some of the layout up and running during winter, taking so long to build in module form, worth the effort, raining pretty heavy today may get some work done today on drilling the old module legs so I can reuse them again by joining them together as a frame for the modules in the car port, latest pics on my post.
