george356
First stage is to move the sleepers into position next to the existing ones. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/DSC_7705.jpg' alt='URL>'> First one in http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/DSC_7706.jpg' alt='URL>'> Then the other 2 I have laid a 5 metre length of decking on the sleepers to show the slope of the garden, believe it or not it is still an incline!! SouthernTom
Good to see another layout starting up! Looks like you have to perfect plot of land to start on. Rain has stop play here on my railway for a week or so now Can't wait to see you railway progress.
george356
Thanks for the encouragement, Tom. We have just had a thunderclap here, so probably more of the same that stopped Newcastle in it's tracks last week

SouthernTom
Yes, the weather is starting to get abit boring. I have had a few alright days down here in the south. It was raining this morning then got really nice this afternoon.
mick
...and an Amber weather warning for heavy and persistent rain on Friday isn't going to make things any better over the coming days! All I can offer by way of solace is that when I first thought about building a garden railway the advice I was given was that the British weather wasn't at all suitable. It's not been good so far this summer I agree and anyone attempting to get on with constructing an outdoor layout at this time may well be wondering what on earth they've let themselves in for but there'll be plenty of fine days to come. It's good to see the materials have arrived and as I mentioned before, the gravel will allow you to get out there as soon as the rain stops rather than having to wait for the lawn to dry out. With the amount of rain we've had this year already, my guess is we should have a decent late summer/autumn and that's a nice time to be outdoors. By the way - your potted plants look to be in much better condition than any of mine.
traingeekboy
What I would give for an hours rain. My spinach is all dead. My cucumbers are wilted. It's actually too sunny to work on the layout here as well, 95 degrees being a mild day this week, but I have decided i need to get out there regardless. Rossi
The pixs of the delivery of goods look great. It means you've now turned the corner. No going back. I keep hearing about the weather back in the UK and sympathise. Even after all these years abroad I still remember the wet summers, the turning on of the central heating at 4 o'clock in late August and the drawing of the curtains and lights on at the same time. I also echo the words of Griff asking for some rain...We probably wont see the stuff until about November. And because we didn't get our usual tropical thunderstorms in January we are now blighted with all sorts of nipping/eating bugs on the plants which should have been washed away by now. Just had four days of dust clouds(from Africa) which covered the railway...so it's not all plain sailing over here... (Probably not the best phrase to use for you all in the UK.) By the way George, loved the shot of those sleepers. Maybe join up with my Bull head chair (earlier post) I've just received. If those don't stop the dreaded warping I don't know what will. Are they still creosoted like in the old days or has that now been outlawed by Health and Safety people? They look exceptionally clean.
george356
Thanks for the reply, Rossi. Sleepers are new ones. They are pressure treated and guaranteed for 20 years . I could have bought used ones which would have been creosoted, but IF we get a warm summer they have a tendency to 'bleed' and I thought that was not a good idea The alternative, for the same price, was oak baulks. They need no treatment and would last a thousand years, but they are so heavy it would take 3 men to lift one and every track pin would need a pilot hole!! george356
In between the thunderstorms I managed to get some of the concrete blocks placed roughly where I need them. They are not set into any foundations yet, rain stopped play, again!! http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7711.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7712.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7713.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7714.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7715.jpg' alt='URL>'>
george356
Hooray!! - it's not raining Booo, I'm working (but from home, and I finish at 3pm ) so I am out there as soon as. Right - first lot of blocks laid on foundations I poured on Sunday. These are at the top of the garden and will define the level for the rest of the trackbed. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7716.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7717.jpg' alt='URL>'> The next ones to be laid are at the corner of the 2 sets of sleepers. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7718.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7721.jpg' alt='URL>'> And with a deckboard laid on them, to judge the level. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7722.jpg' alt='URL>'> Then the other end of the sleepers. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7719.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7720.jpg' alt='URL>'> That gives me the 4 corners and therefore the overall level for the intermediate blocks. 10 blocks laid, I am aching, arthritic left ankle is hurting. I will call it a day at that, don't want to kill myself and sicken myself for the rest of the job - bit at a time, that's my motto. George
traingeekboy
Ahhh the aches and pains... Yet it's all worth it! It's looking really good out there. keep it up you'll be running trains in no time.
george356
Had a busy few days but made good progress. george356
So, today was fine and warm, started putting decking down. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7729.jpg' alt='URL>'> Angling the cuts at the bends so the board width remains constant. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7731.jpg' alt='URL>'> http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7732.jpg' alt='URL>'> The board alongside the path has not yet been secured. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l616/george356/Garden%20Railway/DSC_7730.jpg' alt='URL>'> I am now going to construct the formwork so that I can pour a concrete viaduct at the sleeper end of the run alongside the path. Pics of that to follow (when I work out how I am going to do it ) Once that is done then it is roofing felt and tracklaying, getting exciting now!!! mick
That looks like sunshine in some of those latest photos George Great progress made but do check on the angled curves to make sure they're not too sharp. It's always difficult to judge the angles from photos but you might need to add a small filler section of timber in order to make the curve gentler if it proves too severe for some of the more recent locos and coaches. Looks like you're going to be running well before I am!
