Been to B&Q tonight to get some more 'spray on balast' along with some paint for the decking so busy day tomorrow provided the rain keeps off that is! Also got some timber to build some much needed cable ducts along the fence. Think I do less work at work!

The motorway sign was made from old lengths of rail some bits of brass and a couple of white leds that were stripped off some cheep christmas decorations last year. The sign itself was downloaded off the highway code website then sized, printed then laminated. Well spured on by the sucess so far with the laminator I have decided that the space next to the motorway needs somthing big to give the layout some depth so I am in the process of printing off a scalescenes warehouse kit before sticking it through the laminator. Should prove intresting watch this space!! Ok yesterday not much happened as I spent all day painting the handrails around the decking although I did manage to build three lengths of cable ducting along the fence. Today the sun is shining and the blooming wind has dropped and what am I doing? painting the decking!!! Unfortunatly the paint is turning pink so looks like I will have to paint somthing more 'sutable' later.

I have just managed to 'balast the garden section around the level crossing. Big thanks to RJR who sugested the use of stone effect paint last year on his own garden railway. I still need to spray the top protective coat but heres a few pics to give an idea....

Ok todays update. To try and regain some lost 'modeling time' I started repainting the decking at 7am with the help of a halogen work light. By 10am the colour was a bit more acceptable! However we have had very high winds today so I ended up running round with an electric screwdriver fastening things down. To stop the tarpaulin sheet from taking off I chucked an eight foot long fence post on top of it. The wind got so strong that it threw the post up in the air and it landed just short of the railway. I thought the worst was over until the wind got under one of the metal sheets that was laid on the lawn and flung it across the garden. Unfortunately it took woodham station, signal box and the footbridge with it! Still the buildings needed some 'repairs' anyway and the footbridge was due to have its electrification protection fitted so looks like the job has been brought forward. Judging by the UPS bleeping a moment ago looks like the mains supply may go off at some point. OH JOY!! Anyway on with the pics... Heres the laminated scalescenes warehouse kit .........

Now after building the warehouse I had an idea for something that I've never seen on a model railway before so before I post the rest of the pics I want to see if anyone can guess what it is......? The answer may provoke some intresting comments!

As it was the last day of my suposed modeling hoilday I thought I had better do somthing more constructive than finish painting the decking/fence. So spured on by a couple of pics I made a start on Byerley Parkway station.......

The station has been built with a removerable roof section to allow for track cleaning, etc. The use of the hornby platforms has ment that I have had to compromise on the width of the platform buildings although from a normal viewing distance the overall proportions of the station look about right. For the platform buildings Im hopeing to design them on the PC then once printed I will laminate the sheets before gluing in place. The overall roof as far as I can make out has ridges along the front so I will proberly cover the wooden frame with embossed plasticard sheet. The roof section is slightly recessed and I have thought of using it to mount the controlers in for the garden section!

This morning I have a great sense of achivement as by using a scanner, a door and window frame from a triang station, a bit of photo software, a printer and a laminator I have managed to produce the platform buildings for parkway station.........

The roof covering still needs cutting when I can find sutiable timber. This will allow the roof to be lifted off for maintaince. Following on from producing the artwork for the station buildings my attention wandered over to the old triang signal box. I decided that an extension was in order to make it fit in better.......

Well the company that I work for has now been sold and the office has moved from Cramlington to Team valley so now I dont have to travel as far for spare parts, etc. One positive thing about the move is the office is now round the corner from hobbycraft! So this afternoon they thought I was traveling up to collect some spares but we all know that I realy went to get some more plasticard strips to finish off the station!!! Tonight I got some more of the strips glued on untill I lost the fealing in my fingers as the tempreture dropped. Last night I fitted some plasticard panels to the damaged footbridge. These have been added to stop anyone comming into contact with the OHLE. I sprayed the bridge with grey undercoat ready for a change of colour. Will stick some pics up at the weekend.

Its amazing what diffrence putting the clock back an hour makes. Now when I get home its dark and cold and depressing!! Conscenquently not much has happened on the railway during the week. Yesterday I glued on some more evergreen strips to the station building just need one more pack to complete. Last night was mainly wasted by me trying to build a barrier from brass. The idea was to attach the bottom of the barrier skirt to a brass tube running under the trackbed. This was then attached to the top section via small brass rods so that when the brass tube was turned the skirt actualy pushed the barrier up. In thorey this would work but building it was a pain. The bottom bar was cut from a sheet of brass then aprox 50x 1mm holes were drilled along its length. For the top section I used a U section of brass that had brass rod soldered across again aprox 50 pieces. The top and bottom were then attached together with some small brass rod. The main problem with the barrier was that it didn't fold up properly. Also when in the upright position it looked a bit big!! So now im working on plan B that is to have four barriers two on each side. Before I spend any more time building the barriers however I think it would be a good idea to build the lifting mechinism first as if I can't get this working the barriers will be modeled in the down position. More on this over the next few weeks....... Today I decided to tidy up the layout. Once all the junk was removed and the debries hovered off I laid some balast. The balast used was from my local pet shop and is actualy intended for use in fish tanks but at £3.50 for a BIG bag I coulden't resist! The balast still needs sticking down this will be done using clear varninsh as tested outside last year. Once stuck the trackbed will be given a coat of stone effect paint....

With all the wet weather we have had I have noticed a slight leak in the clear roof. Some water has dripped down onto the prision and turned the roof green looks quite cool actualy! Anyway to prevent any more damage I have fitted some drip trays just above the area that will deflect any more water down the fence and away from the railway. I mentioned last week that woodham station took a beating in the high winds. The buildings were removed and repainted with brick red masonary paint. The footbridge has also been rebuild and now sports OHLE protection boards........

Sorry about the quality as this didn't scan very well. This was the first plan of the redesigned garden railway. It's not to scale but shows the basic setup. The left hand side is the garage section. This has evolved over the past year to use every bit possable of the 16' x 8' garage. The plan shows the first design with the return loop diving down under the station aproch lines. This then evolved into the present arangement of a ladder junction using the longest points that peco make! The right hand of the plan shows the garden section and the location of the stations to each other. I have worked out that the distance from the start at st davids out to the garden back to the lower loops then back out and round to st davids again is aprox 4.7 miles!

Last night after finishing off insulating the garage roof I decided to make a start on the balasting. I have used some fish tank gravel that I got from my local pet shop. The size of the gravel looks ok for 00 gauge and at £3.50 for a very large bag it would have been rude not too! Anyhow once painted with stone fleck paint it looks ok. The balast has been stuck down using clear varnish. I have found this works realy well and have used this methord outdoors without any problems. Heres a pic after a quick spray with paint.......

DSCF0293-1.jpgx216 ... 0293-1.jpghttp://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x216/87101/DSCF0293-1.jpg' alt='URL>'>

Once I had balasted the track attention turned to the water in the canal. Over the years I have never realy got the hang of modeling water until now. The base of the canal is a piece of plastic sheet that is painted black on the underside. The top has been given a coat of varnish then I got a bit creative with a cable tie! As the varnish was drying I used the cable tie to shape the ripples around the boat. To speed up the drying time I used a hair dryer. This actualy shaped the ripples by itself! Heres a few pics of the result......

The base of the scenery was built up from polystyrene sheeting stuck together using my favourite stuff decoraters caulking. This stuff is great for sceneary building and is only £1 a tube from poundstreachers! The roadway was made from thick card stuck in place with the caulking and then painted with stone effect paint. The grass matting is stuck with.... caulking along with the bushes........

Needless to say today whilst on my travels I have been paying extra attention to sets of traffic lights! I have a basic plan in my head that all depends on my old comadore 64 working? Why you may ask? Well a few years back I came up with a use for the old computer. So instead of being a doorstop I used it to control a set of traffic lights. This was done using the user port on the back of the computer. I found that by writing a simple program (anyone remember basic!!) I could switch leds on and off. So I wrote a program that would control 8 leds. 6 leds formed two sets of traffic lights whilst the 2 others were used for the pedestrian crossing(red/green). I managed to get the correct sequence for the lights and even managed to get the ped green to flash! That was as far as I got for not long after we moved house (twice) and the computer got dumped in the garage. Luckly the tape is still in the data recorder with the program on cos after five years I carn't remember how I did it! First job tonight is to make a cable for the TV and see if this old piece of junk still works. Watch this space...

Good news! Not only does the 25year old computer still work so does the program that I saved on cassette tape. Modern technolagy ehh! Once 'loaded up' I typed RUN and away it went. Next step was to stick some leds into the chocblock that was still attached to the computer and watch them change! Heres a very dodgy clip. First the lights on the right then the 'ped crossing' in the middle note the 'green (green man) flashing then the leds on the left. Unfortunately my camera will only take video in 20sec clips but hopefully will give some idea.

Now heres one for the electronics wizz kids out there. The 64 has 8 outputs that switch 5v on/off (TTL?) I need to connect multiple leds to each out yet the outputs dont supply enough current to drive more than 1 led at a time per output. Are there any circuit diagrams about that will enable me to do this?
