Ok, so it looks like you have the Less expensive version of the gresley; how do you like it?

I don't know about more or less expensive, but like ba14eagle says, it was the one I wanted :) Dad bought it me for my birthday about 18 months ago - I think it was about £100 at the time. It is "DCC ready" but not enabled, but most importantly it is the rail speed record version of The Mallard.

I've still over the moon with the loco. Runs like a dream, she has pulled eight coaches without effort for me and more than that she just looks superb on my layout. What more could I want? :)

Well that is good news. I actually had a pretty extensive discussion with Mick via PM's about the problem of wanting something new and the need to stay focused. I'd found some deals on British outline but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, he advised staying the course and getting what I truly want.

Since then I've decided to buy some more flex so I have something to do on the layout; i do like track laying, it gives one such a feeling of accomplishment.

In the past I had bought things on a whim. I had a huge collection of N scale locos. i bought a lot of it just because of the color, but much of it did not fit into a theme for my layout. With the Ho layout i've just accepted that I'm not going to worry about having things fit. So my current list of acquisitions is as follows:

Princess Royal - huge long boiler gotta have it. i'm thinking of getting an older model like the Triang because it makes smoke! A new one would be prohibitive for me cost wise.

Jinty - Have to have it because it looks like a friend in that it's cute. I'm thinking a newer hornby one as they are fairly cheap.

Evening Star - historically important and it has a huge wheel base. I love decapods. There are some cheap on ebay, I'll wait to get a deal on one.

As for the A4 - It's a real toss up. i stumbled on an ebay listing for the blue whigham one; the color, it's usually a color scheme that does it for me. I am thinking if I am going to own a A$ (typoed that but it is somehow appropriate he he :D ) it has to be a good model of it. I may be holding off for some time to get one as I kind of want the top of the line model. I'm even considering the live steam NE one. It's really cool and it has built in sound. Look for an ebay video and listen to the whistle.

I was looking on ebay.co.uk and there are some good models there, but shipping is costly. A 60 dollar engine with 20+ dollars of shipping is after all a 80+ dollar engine. So i have returned to ebay.com and am just going to wait for the items I want that are located in the USA. (You have to understand that in the US British outline is non-existent for the most part.)

At this point all I have is two LMS coaches by Lima that I got for nearly nothing. i think it was equivalent to about 10 pounds if that.

To all, thanks for putting up with my rantings. This place is my train support group so I feel I can go on and on, "Hello my name is Griff, I have a model railroad habit."

Doesn't the Betty Ford clinic deal with this sort of problem ?

If you get Cold Turkey when you come of drugs, I wonder what you get when you kick the model railroad habit... :?

That's a nice wants list you've got there but are you aware that the Live Steam requires its own dedicated transformer and controller and that it cannot be operated at the same time as standard DC models?

I had a live steam A3 'Papyrus' a couple of years back and believe me, you'd love it! In operation they smell just like a real steam loco - amazing! However, they're not easy to control as you have to learn to 'drive' them but practice does make perfect.

I don't believe that Hornby support Live Steam anymore and I doubt that there'll be anything new anytime soon.

Yeah Mick, that live steam is a fantasy scenario. I'm pretty good with electrical though, I bet i could wire it to work for both. Wouldn't risk my DCC on the circuit though. i did see them for sale still so it's not un-feasable; in fact i see the Us power supply on ebay often.

I watched a few videos of the various models and was really taken with the sound of the whistle.

Well my search for the first Uk loco for my roster has ended successfully!

I had my wish list but sometimes you have to settle for something else. What I ended up getting is a big tank engine in LMS black. It's a 2-6-4 by Hornby. Looks to be in good condition with all the lining crisp and clean.

I also got a good deal on it. It was only 36.00 USD shipping included so the actual price of the item was around 26.00$ which is cheap for this loco. I used an online calculator to get a general range and it was between 23-24 pounds all together. I consider this to be a fairly good deal and it will go with my LMS coaches.

I looked it up in the hornby site I posted up and it's one of these: http://www.hornbyguide.com/item_year_details.asp?itemyearid=1638 , so it's a 80's era model; it's almost too good for my collection of 70's stuff. :?
