mick
Not sure what I was looking at originally, but I happened to stumble upon this website that advertises Garden Railway Products manufactured from recycled plastics. The products are actually intended for the larger scales but I'm sure that some of them would be suitable for OO gauge too and could be adapted for use. With all the problems associated with the use of timber outdoors and the need to protect it from the elements it seems only logical that a plastic alternative be used instead. It's not as cheap as the corresponding sized timber product but it should pose fewer problems in the long term.
IanR
That is just the sort of thing I had in mind when I built the Kirkfield & Warmthorpe. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything suitable at the time. It would seem to be ideal although I wonder how it reacts to heat as plastics do seem to expand alot when the sun shines and of course contract when it goes in.
