ba14eagle
This is my representation of the 1S19 Bristol to Glasgow & Edinburgh overnight, sleeper service (or its Southbound counterpart 1V32) In reality, this train would load between 14 & 16 vehicles, but mine is 12 coaches. I have omitted 1 sleeping car and 1 TSO, from each portion. The preferred traction, during the 1980's, was a class 45 "Peak", although class 47 & class 50 did put in appearances. The train ran 7 days a week and could often be diverted due to engineering works - just between Birmingham and Bristol, it could travel via Lydney and Severn Tunnel Jn (reverse) or via Oxford and Swindon. The Northbound service would stop at Bromsgrove and get a shove from the resident bankers. In Summertime, the train would not start / terminate at Bristol, but Paignton, Plymouth or Penzance - this would involve complex shunting, before the train went forward without the sleeping cars. Over the border in Scotland, the 2 portions would split or attach at Carstairs - a rural, lonely station, where trains generally only called for this to take place. Most of these vehicles - a mix of Hornby and Bachmann - have been in my collection for 5 or 6 years, but only recently did I get up enough enthusiasm to dismantle them and do my thing to them / prepare them for service. This basically comes down to painting the interior, fitting passengers, any other internal detailing - in this case, putting paper window labels in windows, renumbering and weathering. I couldn't take the MK3 sleepers apart, so no painting, no sleeping passengers or window labels! The first portion Ive shown is the Glasgow portion, with air conditioned day coaches. These were Polmadie based and although the train didnt convey first class seated passengers, Ive substituted a MK2A BSO with a MK2D BFK - downgraded! Ive done this, as without the sleeping cars, these vehicles can be used as an Anglo-Scottish cross country service. The Mk1 buffet coach shown at the end, also forms part of that cross country train set. The second portion is the Edinburgh portion, which is formed of Craigentinny allocated MK2A stock. All the Scottish allocated sleeping cars, at the time, were allocated to Craigentinny. The sleeping cars are of 2 types SLE and SLEP. SLEP have a pantry, instead of a second toilet and have only 1 white window, as opposed to 2. Hornby only produce the SLE and so I had to remove the 2nd white window as best I could - very difficult when you cant dismantle the vehicle!
mick
A very interesting and thoroughly enjoyable post. I've really enjoyed reading through it and the end result is a stunning rake of very realistic coaches. Great to see you back modelling!
Andrew
Yes, fascinating, and those are superb coaches now. Passengers too - that raises the bar substantially. I look forward to seeing the complete train behind a Peak. Somewhere tucked away I have a rake of Airfix Mk2D/E blue and grey coaches which were intended to form a 1970s/80s ECML train behind a Deltic. As they've never been run, it's time to ferret them out, but the equally unused Mainline(?) Deltic didn't have any window glazing, which was a bit of a turnoff. Riddles
If your Lima Class 55 Deltic is still without windows, South Eastern Finecast are still advertising a Flushglaze kit, reference SE07 at only £2.50 + £1 post and packing.
