New build

Building materials have arrived today, construction will start over the next few weeks. My railway will be basic to start with 3m by 3m. The track will run along decking boards that are covered with roofing felt with bricks underneath to support them and keeping them off the ground the railway will be DC.

HI Deano, great to here, a new layout soon be born, yes good move as well, I am DC as well, DCC can be a pain when things go wrong.

Looking forward to seeing some progress pics, nice start 3mx3m are you going to build on it later., how high is your decking boards, you can take advantage of that to save bending down setting up a train.

I am thinking of doing something to save me bending down and lacking a main yard, one day, more cost.

Hi Tony,

The track will only be of the ground by the thickness of a brick, Hopefully I will be able to expand in the future (if the wife lets me lol).

I will struggle to bend down to the track with my health but I have been thinking about a section of track leading into the shed then having some sort of pulley system to lower trains from my work bench onto the track in the shed then out on to the layout.

Hi Deano, hw is the layout construction going, progressing well, looking forward to seeing some pics.

You were talking about some sort of pulley set up, why not an old ironing board , screw on a piece of ply and moulting the ironing board to the floor and bingo you can raise the track up and down, what I am thinking of doing, called virtual staging yard.

I have being busy soldering the feeder wires to the bus wires and to the track, got that down to a fine art now, key is keeping the soldering iron tip from getting too hot.

Hi Tony,

All of the construction materials are here but unfortunately my wife collapsed recently  and was taken to hospital by ambulance. She is home now and the specialist are trying to get her medication right. So sadly my Garden railway is on hold.

I love the ironing board idea I will give that some thought thank you.

I hope you Railway is progesssing well and your making good progress. You will have to give me lots of tips on wiring and soldering lol not looking forward to that part lol.

keep me updated

Take care

Deano

HI Deano, not good about your wife collapsing, did the hospital doctors keep her in over night, medication can be a pian, gee my wife had to go to hospital as well last Friday night, she has problems with reflux and can get mistaken for a heat attack, her brother was having the same issue but he did have a heat attack what she was worried about the doc's said to just up her medication, I had to pick  her up, 1. am in the morning.

Family health comes first always, is your brother in law still helping you build your layout.

I am looking for a cheap ironing board so I can use it for a vertical staging yard, these yards are so costly, looking at with the vertical staging yard be a draw set up as well save on all those points. I am also looking at what I can use as rails, cut back on track, have to being on a budget.

No worries I will help you through when you are ready to start on the wiring, I am hooping to set up my own Facebook page, a lot of my wife doesn't want me to take over his page,, my mum tried the with her late husbands page, couldn't change his pic, we can chat on Facebook and wonder if they have video link.

THanks, yes my layout is progressing well, have finely completed the spiral corner module with all the bus wiring, 6 blocks coming from that module all that wire, running out need more and only one electrical shop in Ipswich I can get the wire from and other parts needed.

The ship and bridge projects and well coming along, just finished the cutaway plan for drawing of both decks , heading over to my posts soon to post progress pics never ending, being at it for three days on the wiring of two modules and a lift out bridge, have a break now for a few days, meeting tomorrow night, don't do much at all day, hospital appointment Tuesday, stress test.

How are you going ok , take care.

Tony, from down under, cooling down mid 20's all week.

Hi Tony,

Sorry to hear your wife is not well, I wish her a speedy recovery. My wife came out the same day luckily as I don’t think she would cope well in hospital

life can be so cruel sometimes when it comes to our health. My Brother in law has just become a Dad for the first time so I might be on my own on this one lol. I will take my time and plod along and see how I get on.

Thanks for the offer of help with the wiring i appreciate it.

your builds are coming along well keep up the good work.

cheers Deano

Hi Tony,

Quick newbie Question, I will have a small section of track at the station i want a train to stop at each time at the platform. My question is were do I place insulated joiners ? Would it be right in front of the loco so it stops dead at the start of inslated section? I will have a platform in between the tracks and one outside the station.

ps points are insulfrog Hornby

Cheers Deano

HI Deano, tell your brother in law congratulations from down under, is he a first time dad., oh those sleepless nights ahead, fingers crossed his new born is a good baby, our son was he didn't wake up at all when he was a baby made up for it  in later years, yeah life sure is not made to be easy going by what we went through.

A bit of work ahead in wiring to turn a train around on a loop, first up you will need  those plastic insulated rain joiners , not one two DPDT switches, the reason is you need  one to switch the polarity and second to switch the direction as in the diagram.

Your pics are correct where the plastic joiners goes  in the reverse loop,  using Insulfrog points,, you may need  insulated joiners in the station track to hold one train while the other comes into the station and  DPDT switches needed, will draw up a diagram.

The amni thing is have fun when planning and building your layout I do.

I am at the planning stage of building and wiring my main control panel, tomorrow be buying the ply for the face of the control panel and the fun begins, good news is I can do all th soldering at night on my hobby room.

Try out the way the reverse  loop DPDT switch is wired in the pic, could get away with one switch.

Hi Tony,

On this diagram were would insulated rail joiners go? I would like to stop one train at the station then allow another to go.

thanks Deano

Late Morning Deano, the insulated rail joiners go on the curve of the point and straight at both ends, then you will need a DPDT switch  for both track, only needing to wire the centre poles and one end to go back to  your trannie or throttle, also doing the same with the other track, more fun add two more points at the back of the layout for a passing loop.

Gets better and more fun dual throttles more insulated track joiners and more blocks, the only way you can enjoy running  more than one loco in DC, I will be able to run four throutles, two local throttles and two remote main line throttles, can't afford DCC.

My layout is based on single  track running, do not ike double track layouts, more interesting this way and heaps more fun with friends coming over for a running day,

I went to the Hard ware shop Bunning today and bought a 7mm sheet of ply for my main control panel plus a spade drill, guess what wrong size, with Bunning can take it back, I do have a 16mm bit will test it tomorrow, then I will know if I need to get the 18mm spade drill bit.

Heading over to you tube to search for how to make a drill press, the  hole when drilling has to be level  can't do that holding onto the drill, I have made myself a circular saw cross cutting jig works well.

start on my control panel the weekend.

Take care Tony from down under
