I was expecting news regarding Bachmann's programme announcement for 2011/2012 around midday today so imagine my surprise when I noticed that the Bachmann website had been updated with details of the forthcoming programme in the early hours of this morning. A quick read through the listing brought some welcome news and so I will try to highlight the major points here.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST OF THE NEW BACHMANN 2011/2012 CATALOGUE

LOCOMOTIVES

My first smile came as I noticed that 3 ex LNER locos are to be upgraded with new chassis and the provision of DCC sockets. These are the A4, V2 and of course, the B1. Many people believed that Bachmann would allow the B1 to fade after the news that Hornby are to introduce their own model of that locomotive but here's a strong message from Bachmann that they aren't ready to give up on it. The V2 is the most welcomed upgrade of the trio as far as I'm concerned, finally allowing me to obtain 'Green Arrow' in its NRM Preserved livery and with the addition of a fixed cartazzi truck.

31-550B V2 4771 'Green Arrow' LNER Lined Doncaster Green (Preserved NRM) 110.65

31-564 V2 60860 'Durham School' BR Lined Black Early Emblem 110.65

31-565 V2 60862 BR Lined Green Late Crest Double Chimney 110.65

31-952B A4 4468 'Mallard' LNER Garter Blue with Valances 121.95

31-964 A4 4-6-2 60004 'William Whitelaw' BR Lined Green Late Crest 121.95

31-965 A4 4-6-2 60021 'Wild Swan' BR Lined Green Early Emblem 121.95

Added to the new catalogue are details of the LMS twin locomotives previously announced in association with Rails of Sheffield. I'm not sure if these are the 'Rails of Sheffield' commissioned models or a standard release variant that Bachmann are releasing themselves. What surprises me here is the RRP of only £106.60 for an entirely new locomotive - perhaps influenced in no small part by the announcement of the corresponding Dapol/Hattons version of the same two loco's.

31-995 LMS 10000 BR Brunswick Green, Lined Orange & Black 106.60

31-996 LMS 10000 BR Brunswick Green, Part Eggshell Blue Waistband 106.60

31-997 LMS 10001 BR Brunswick Green, Part Eggshell Blue Waistband 106.60

There are an additional three entirely new locomotives added to the Bachmann catalogue.

So what are your thoughts on the Bachmann announcement for 2011/2012?

I'm delighted that the 3 brand new locomotives that have been announced do not hold that much interest for me! I could do with time to catch up with the items I want as it is so it's a breath of relief from me on that front.

Of the models I am interested in, the retooled V2 will be high on my shopping list in its 'Green Arrow' livery as preserved at the National Railway Museum. I've ignored it up to now due to the fact that it wasn't DCC ready so the new chassis will sway it for me and from the photographs supplied by Bachmann the new fixed cartazzi truck makes a world of difference to the rear end as it does with the A4. I've already got enough A4s (can you ever have enough A4s?) for my requirements and the B1 doesn't really fit in with my proposed plans, but can I resist them both? Now if only Bachmann had managed to slot the WD into the chassis re-tooling category as well!

Unless I've missed it completely (?) I can see no new versions of the extremely popular Class 70 locomotive. I wouldn't personally be in the market for another one just yet but with its popularity among modern day modellers I was expecting new numbers.

I notice that a version of the class 108 DMU is to be released as DCC fitted which will save the task of removing the body to fit the chips yourself and after the trouble I had with mine that's got to be good news!

On the coaching stock front, the Post Office Sorting Vans will be a must have, and the BR Mk1 sleepers will be extremely tempting. I'll also take a look at the new LMS porthole coaches.

I've not really taken an in-depth look at the new wagons on offer because I already have a fair listing of 'wants' from the past years catalogue but I notice that the auto-ballasters are to continue in the current Railtrack livery although the addition of a 'A' suffix to the catalogue numbers suggests different wagon numbers.

Overall it's a thumbs up from me because the announcement leaves me with enough to look forward to without the prospect of facing severe financial difficulties :) There's already enough new models waiting in the wings for this year to put a strain on the finances.

I'm certainly with you there!

Glad to see that the B1 and V2 are getting an update. I fitted a brass cartazzi kit to my V2 and it makes a world of difference.http://derob.co.uk/V2_Loco.htm

  • 1 month later...

I too like the Bachmann 2011/12 list of future releases a B1 and V2 would be high on my shopping list as would be the LMS 'porthole' coaches. I've already got 3 A4's from Hornby, would have bought Bachmann ones but at the time as at present they're split frame chassis and not really good for DCC. It is possible to fit with DCC but it's a real pain in the proverbial. That I think leaves only the GW Manor, 53xx and J72 to be upgraded and then it's goodbye to the old Mainline legacy.

Would be nice if Bachmann did a GW 42xx 2-8-0 tank or and as well a 72xx 2-8-2 tank.

Roy. :D
