  1. You should get some information here. https://www.dfds.com/group/media/contacts
  2. I confess to ripping out all of the trackwork and base from the garden. Building that gave me a good recovery from major surgery, but the cost of stock made it difficult to continue. Despite being laid for four and a half years, and totally ignored for four of those, nothing had moved, rotted, or come adrift. Some time ago, I built a layout in the garage to represent Ramsgate Tramways. There is a hill at either end, but despite the care that I took with scale adjustments, they were too steep to negotiate. This Summer, I have redone Ramsgate, but a shorter distance over the same length of board. Portable too instead of fixed. That's a work in progress and I am confident that my hills are much more useable. A fortnight ago, I purchased a Petter stationary engine that was built between 1945 and 1947. The serial number makes me believe that it's from 1947, making it a year older than me. Something to clean, and paint, and polish, and occassionally start up and annoy the neighbours. So I'm still busy, but not in a railway sense. I am still here watching and sometimes commenting, but had I kept every locomotive and wagon that I have owned over the years, the garden railway would have been much more viable. How though, can I start from scratch and justify spending hundreds if not thousands of pounds on rolling stock?
  3. So sorry to hear this Tony. As usual, words aren't enough to help in any way. Be strong for your wife, and together you will come through the dark times. Roddy.
  4. Theres a Bachmann wagon on Google Images that shows it to be a lightish brown. You had better check, because I'm a bit colour blind.
  5. Here in the North East we have the Tyne and Wear Metro system. 2 or 4 coach units that run on reopened lines that Beeching did away with. All are driver only. CCTV and mirrors on the platform ends allow the driver to see the length of his train as he closes the doors. Safe---yes, except for there being no control over the hooligans who will always make trouble given half a chance. The driver also sits in a half cab and can be contacted by rapping on his window!

  7. Tony, Google is your friend----- Brisbane's average rainfall is around 1200 mm. a year. Of course, rainfall patterns vary across the large metropolitan area. The pattern is for a dry period from April to September, which receives only around 400 mm., with a wet season from October to March getting twice as much rain- about 800 mm.
  8. I used an inverter to give me 240 volts in a catering trailer that I had. No good for fridges or anything that heated. The leisure battery is the one to have because it will take long low dischsrges, where a car battery is designed more to give a powerful discharge to fire the starter motor. I'm sure that Q will be along to give us the technical whys and wherefores surrounding batteries.
  9. Back to back wheel distance? If the wheels are too close together, they will ride up on the check rail. Or old Triang stock with their thicker flanges?
  10. Homebase here was certainly taken over a couple of years ago, but re-opened as The Range. I had no idea of the Bunnings connection. I'm afraid that it's not a shop that I ever visit. And thanks for confirming my description of British weather to Tony.
  11. Haha Tony, I think you have the wrong idea about our weather. Indeed I have seen snow on my birthday in June. Summer is warmer, Winter is colder, but rain and cold days can happen in Summer just as much as rain and warm days can happen in Winter. Snow is very much an exception and can be nothing more than a dusting, or full on blizzard. Here in the North, I have seen no snow (because I'm on the coast) and very few frosts. Yesterday was tee shirt weather with bright sunshine. Today is dull and a cold wind. It is said that we can have four seasons in one day. It's certainly why we always talk about the weather, even to strangers. We don't have Bunnings, but we do have other suppliers.
  12. You need something like this that drills the pilot hole and countersinks at the same time. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-Drill-Countersink-Set-7pce-3-6mm-273222/121548494342?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41433%26meid%3Def2ae4f34a764f3d8c136e051ee6b654%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D371867555731
  13. Tony, is it true that there are plans to tow Australia to a new site just off the Outer Hebrides? It's much cooler there for you.
  14. I am not an arguer of politics either Mick. It's a bit like football or religion where nobody will listen to an opposing arguement. What I see is that Britain at the moment is an unstable proposition as nobody knows where we will be in two or three years time. That's what causes the volatility in the market, and a reluctance of investors to invest. Had the vote been to remain in Europe, nothing would have changed. Something that gets right up my nose living in Sunderland, is that seemingly sensible political journalists, blame Sunderland for the Brexit vote. Sunderland was the first to declare in favour of Brexit, but that wasn't announced until well after the polls had closed. How does that make Sunderland responsible for a Brexit vote? The biggest problem is that everyone that matters are still not discussing properly our terms of exit. This must be a Parliament decision rather than just a Government one, so why did it take a Yank to take the case to the Supreme Court to achieve it. There aren't many politicians who were in favour of Brexit, so apart from still being in denial about it, they don't really know what to do. Just my personal opinion of course-----no argument incited or offence meant.
  15. Google "Summit tunnel fire" and see what a brick lined tunnel can take.
  16. It's not good to recommend security systems really. I bought a new system for my house from that well known DIY shed under the name "Response". You get a control panel to site in the house, a siren to fix high up outside the house, and 2 PIR movement detectors, plus two magnetic switches for doors or windows. Also a key fob to turn it on and off without using the control panel. The beauty of it is that it is a wireless system. I have fitted it to my house with a sensor in the detached garage. I set it to "Part alarm" when I am home which just covers the garage, and "Full alarm" when I'm out. Apart from renewing the batteries in the sensors it has been flawless for over four years. I do need to change the battery in the siren which is normally solar rechargeable, but is on a shady side of the house. The instructions are comprehensive and the whole set up is easy enough. I have no connections to either supplier except as a customer and you must check my words to satisfy yourself.
  17. Thank you for that info. I tried that sort of adhesive, but not from Screwfix. Normally it's very good, but I had no luck at all with the polystyrene. Must try again.
  18. May I ask what adhesive you used to fix the polystyrene to the corrugated steel? I have a lovely metal garage which desperately needs insulating. I tried several adhesives without success. Do you use the 1" or 2' batts that come in something like a 4x2ft size, or something different. In my Summerhouse, I used two layers of polystyrene veneer that has made a huge difference.
  19. I haven't built any of the kits Chris, but I have bought the papers to print myself. I have been in touch with them for a couple of years now and they have really grown, especially in the accessory department. Different fencings and street and station furniture. They seem to be perfecting the laser cutting process almost to the point of doing bespoke stuff. If you get on the mailing list for a twice weekly newsletter, you soon get to see how their stuff is being used too. It's worth a try with their prices.
  20. Have a look at Gordon Bulmer of Gordons Trams. He has a carousel working on the end of a pier. Also Modelrailwayscenery.com for downloads of papers and kits.
  21. A feed for each direction with a common return??
