  9. Hi Mark, It's always good when someone finally achieves a dream, I hope you enjoy every minute of it chap. I am sorry to hear you are suffering with arthritis, I get it a bit in my hands and that's bad enough, though currently I'm off work with sciatica which I would not wish on my worst enemy, well probably I would cos it's a bas*%$d! I must admit I had Google your new motor as I hadn't a clue what one was! So excuse my ignorance here,.............If I've got this right it's 11 grands worth of Vauxhall Carlton with a 3.5ltr Lotus lump under the lid? WOW !! I have to say I'm not that much into cars, I like different things, for example I very nearly bought 6x6 ex US army Truck but was thwarted at the last hurdle by her indoors who would not let me park it on the front garden!.............can't imagine why not! I am currently restoring my daily driver which is a 1997 Rover 416 Tourer which I paid the princely sum of £250 for 18 months ago, it's on LPG and costs less than £20 a week to run! happy days! Can't help but think though that 11 grand would buy a hell of lot of TRAINS matey! Nige.

  13. Shaun, this is just a personal thing but I would not use the Hornby points, particularly outside, as I don't think they as as well put together as the Peco ones. I do have a couple of Hornby points in some sidings inside and they are just not the same, get yourself a Peco one and make a comparison and you will see what I mean. Nige.

  15. Yes Mark, it's just fine now thank you...............nearly anyway! I'd thought about having one of these journal thingys, but her indoors said I do enough muttering and mumbling as it is without writing about it! She thinks I have lost the plot........................I didn't even know there was a plot!

Shaun, I also solder a fine wire from the switch blade to the stock rail on each side, I know this then makes the points non isolating but it ensures that there is always electrical connectivity and you don't have to bother about cleaning the inside edge of the point blades, this ensures that the trains do not stop just after the points.(really frustrating, especially when it's at the other end of the garden)! Then of course I have to install insulating fish plates immediately after the points an electrical track feed (just a jumper from the toe end of the point) and a switch which is then built into the control panel, sounds more complicated than it is, and it is a bit of a faf but you only have to do it the once, and then you have in effect restored the isolating function of the points. With regards to replacing the points I think that we have only ever replaced about 3 or 4 due to component failure in the whole time we have been running out doors, sun damage is the worst offender, followed closely by myself!
  17. Hi Shaun, I have been running outdoors for over 15yrs now and I have not had that much trouble with points. Yes to be fair you have to maintain and clean them and the worse thing I find with Peco ones is the little spring that keeps the blades over to which ever side the points are set (it tends to rust away) keep them coated with something like WD40 and they will survive ok. (but just like Network Rail you will have to replace bits of track from time to time) As for the motors themselves, I tend to use H+M solenoid motors, they are quite old nowadays and can only be bought S/Hand but they are fairly bullet proof. I usually put them in a building trackside or mount them under the boards if possible, again sprayed with WD. Oh, I'm not running DCC though so not sure how that effects point motors if indeed it does! Keep asking questions by all means, but in the end you're just going to have to "go for it" chap! You can rest assured we're all still making mistakes, and some of them are real "school boy errors"! Nige.

  20. Hi Shaun I have used 18mm ply as a track base, for no other reason than I acquired over 20 8x4 sheets of the stuff from a nearby building site that they were going to burn! And all for the price of asking! Anyway, I digress, you will need to build it on a framework of some sort or it WILL sag no matter what. If you trawl through my posts and look for "Indoor Outdoor Layout" it's on page 17 you will see some pic's of our layout before the ply was put down, showing the framework that I constructed first, it's built from 3x3 posts and 3x1 and 1 1/8 runners these are imperial measurements as I am old ok I have most likely over engineered the framework but I'd sooner have it too strong than not strong enough,.............you can actually walk on on it if you should need to! Having said all that it's been outside now since 2012 and we have quite a few dips! some of which we have repaired some not! You will find running outside is just like the real thing you are always maintaining the track in one form or another.
