  2. I have hesitated to post this, and still await being shot down in flames, but from the figures you have quoted, is not the coefficient of expansion for the plastic 100 times greater than that of nickel silver rail?
  3. There is one product which Thomas alerted us to, some months back. It is made in Ireland and is very expensive but sounds ideal. Check out "Medite Tricoya Extreme". An 8' x 4' piece 12mm thick can be had at present for £241.30 online. The blurb says "Medite Tricoya MDF is a revolutionary board that is characterised by its durability, dimensional stability and reliability properties, meaning it may be used in situations and applications where normal MDF panels cannot, even in changing weather conditions. It can be cut, machined and used in exactly the same way as other wood fibreboards and is longer lasting, perfect for outdoor use or wet (interior) environments. It is made using a high performance resin which is also zero added formaldehyde, meaning the product not only exceeds EU E1 but is also CARB2 compliant. The product also comes with a 50 year Medite Tricoya guarantee, providing peace of mind. All boards are FSC® certified". I'm afraid I've no personal experience of the product and have no connection with the maker or any supplier.

  5. Hornby's cancellation of delivery to EU is not intended to be permanent, but who knows how long it will take to resolve the problems?

  8. Yes, you are quite right. With regard to Hattons & Rails and Bachman & Hornby it seems as though the two big names no longer have to compete for our business on a level playing field (to use the phrase of the day) . I know other suppliers stock both names and I do like to support my local shop as well but it is usually much easier to order for door step delivery. We had never used an online grocery delivery service until this year but we have had to try them all to get a delivery slot and there have been several "disappointments" including receiving an afternoon phone call from Sainsbury's saying that they had technical problems so could we click and collect. No. Then we had an Ocado delivery with a large crushed yoghurt (M & S) which had messed up everything else. Perhaps next year we will feel happier venturing out.

  10. On the odd couple of occasions I've had to return items to Hattons, they've emailed me a reply paid label. I'm not sure whether I asked for it or not. If you just post an item back to them without prior notice I don't suppose they will offer to compensate you. Rather naughty of them to send out defective locos as brand new though, especially when they are marked with known faults.

  13. I hadn't heard before you mentioned it, and it's only been confirmed today, so you are certainly keeping your eyes on the ball. I tend to agree about sticking with Hornby. Much of the new stuff is lovely to look at close up but can be rather delicate when you pick it up, especially outside in the garden.

  16. Did you use neat SBR, or the traditional diluted PVA with a drop of washing up liquid method? It looks very realistic. Can we have a little more detail of your method please?
  17. Sorry to hear of your problems Iain. To be honest I think Wiltshire, even if sweltering, is preferable to sitting in a tube in the sky with who knows what circulating in the air. If you obtain a free certificate of posting when you return the Class 117, I don't think KMRC could refuse to compensate you if it failed to reach them or was received damaged, if that is what they told you to do. I can understand your reluctance to do so though.
  18. That bridge is a superb structure in such a natural setting, which for me, is what a garden railway should be. There are three or four other railways of this type on the forum which I hope to emulate one day, including Mick's "Worsley Dale". I presume that the bow bridges are a commercial product although I don't recognise them. Are they still available? The underwater foundations must have been difficult to build without disturbing the pond structure. I am looking forward to seeing and reading more.
  19. It would be good to know whether they are powerful enough to operate two CDLs at the same time, for a crossover. Looking forward to reading your report.
  20. Sadly Britain, i.e. the U.K., can't take the credit for this. It is actually manufactured in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. The owning company, Coilte, is a statutory corporation owned by the Republic of Ireland government. However, the initial development was by a British company Accsys Technologies, with interests in the Netherlands. I've obtained a free sample and it looks perfect for garden railway use.
  21. Of course a DCC layout is always receiving the full voltage, normally around 16 volts in a OO set up. It doesn't slowly ramp up from zero as in traditional DC so that may be an advantage.
  22. Sorry Mick, as I said on Friday on the DCC Systems thread, although I do have a WLANMAUS , I find it easier to use an iPhone or iPad so I don't have a lot of experience of it. There are two (at least) groups on Facebook which might be able to answer your question, if you ever use that media. They are Z21, Digikeijs & automatic control users group and Roco/Fleischmann Z21 Users Group . I find the first very technical and the second perhaps a bit basic but I expect someone on one of them could help.
  23. I've already received a reply, sent at 8.39 this morning regarding concrete sleeper track. A Beard, PECO Technical Advice Bureau, said "Thank you for your email. I can advise that this sleeper base also uses UV stabilised plastic." So there we have it. I wonder whether the same applies to Hornby track. Of course they use different factories but they are responsible for the specification. Roco in Austria, at one time made track for Hornby, and when production moved to China, they supplied the same track to Bachmann.

  25. I believe that the Select has been improved fairly recently and an uprated one will now operate more functions as well as set CVs. I understand that the unit has to be be returned to Hornby for the upgrade to be carried out and I think a figure of £15 was mentioned for this. I have also used eLink and the Elite which I found a cumbersome system. My preference is Z21 (by Roco/Fleischmann). Although I have a Z21 wi-fi multimaus, which has a dial/knob (see below), I much prefer to use my iPhone or iPad as it is so much easier to find and operate different functions. With a little bit of practice it is possible to have very precise speed control simply by angling my thumb slightly on the touchscreen. I must admit that I never expected to find that.
