  1. Don't forget that you won't be able to rely on the point blades making electrical contact for very long outdoors. Take a look at http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=84''>http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=84'>http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=84
  2. Looks like you've been busy Mart! It's looking very good.
  3. That's an excellent first video, Congratulations. Now you just need to teach your son some shunting skills!
  4. Welcome from Wakefield Pete. Try and take time to read through the forum, especially the Members Garden Railways section, you'll find lots of tips and ideas in there. Good luck with building your railway and don't forget to post lots of photos as you proceed. Ian R

  6. Dunno Mick. Do you think they're strong enough? Especially after they've been drilled. Could be worth a try though as you'll get a bag full for a couple of quid.
  7. Had some great weather here in the UK during the last week so I thought I'd better take advantage and do a bit of fettling on the K&WR. I repainted all of the back boards. Sprayed some of the pan scrub 'trees' here and there with green and yellow spray paint. Sprayed the whole layout with 'Algon' patio cleaner as it was taking on an all over green tint. Removed some crumbling areas of ballast and reballasted. (A while ago I thought it would be a good idea to mix some iron filings with the ballast so it would rust and improve the look... it isn't a good idea as when the filings start to rust they also expand and crumble the ballast!) Cleaned all the rails thoroughly. Ran a couple of trains to test. Everything working as it did the last time it was used which was September 2014.
  8. It could well be fine Kris, don't worry. I have no practical experience of bonding track to concrete using silicone. Ian.
  9. Keep an eye on it as I have a feeling that when the concrete gets damp the bond will release. Hope I'm wrong though! Someone on here used "Gorilla Glue" to bond track to masonry. Check out Jaybees Railway in Members Garden Railways.
  10. You'd think that the fact it has a railway trackbed would have them queuing to buy the house!
  11. I agree, expansion of plastics can be a problem. On the subject of "rubbercrete", are rubber granules fairly easy to get hold of?
  12. And then there's uPVC, the stuff they use for soffits and fascias. I think it's available in 9 and 16mm thicknesses and it's not all that expensive, well at least it isn't at a specialist warehouse in Castleford. I haven't used it on the layout myself but if I'd thought about it at the time of building the layout I may have given it a try. I think I'm about due for a visit too Mick. Ian.
  13. Wind and rain will be no problem to the plastic buildings you mention, as long as they're fixed down. It's the sun that causes the problems. It eventually fades the colours and can make some plastics brittle. I have various bulidings on my layout from Skaledale, Dapol, Ratio etc. I give them a coat a coat of DuraClear matt varnish for extra protection and they've been fine. I even have six Dapol girder bridge kits which are in full sun and they're still as strong as ever after five years! These were painted with car bumper spray. Some thing are now in need of a repaint but that's soon rectified. If you're wondering why Griff is asking about your windmill it's because he has a thing about Brits and windmills on garden railways! He doesn't seem understand that it is the law in Europe to have a windmill on your layout. Mind you, the way things are here in the UK it may become the law to have a wind turbine on your layout! Ian R
  14. Farewell the Faulconwood and Springbridge Railway.
  15. Hi Trevor, great to have you, and your fantastic railway on our forum. Everyone... Checkout the following link where you'll find an excellent video of the GWFH&WR. http://www.hornbymagazine.com/view_article.asp?ID=8568 Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Ian R
  16. Hi Gareth and welcome to the forum from the K&WR. I'll look forward to seeing how your railway progresses and if you need any help or advice we'll try to be of help. Good luck, Ian R
  17. That's something I've been experimenting with lately, I bought a couple of cheap bluetooth shower speakers, results are encouraging.
  18. Enjoyable as always Andrew. Do you live in a forest?
  19. Yes, share some photos Roy, then we can all share your heartache. R.I.P. The Faulconwood & Springbridge Railway.
  20. Great work with the powders Craig. My first attempts were with powders and they're a very good way to weather locos and stock without causing permanent damage. I now use an airbrush but also powders for extra effect. Well done! Ian
  21. Laser cutting is brilliant, can you imagine trying to make those like that with a saw?! Looking forward to seeing your new layout progress Mick. Ian.
  22. Plenty of work to do there Tony but yes, it's almost an exact copy of the Google Earth picture, well done! Select the font colour you want, don't move the cursor, type your message. The font colour doesn't change until you post your message.
  23. Well Roy you'd be welcome to visit any time you come to Blighty. You could leave you're shoes on in the garden!
  24. You're welcome Tony. You have to change the font colour BEFORE you type your message. It has been very cold over the holidays but it turned very mild and windy yesterday.
