  1. The extension piece is where I plan to have my station, with a loop at the bottom end to turn everything around again, that's the plan for now anyway. There are a couple of whipper snappers that live over the fence and the wee laddie is train daft and yes he has had a shot and absolutely loves it. lol.
  2. Some pics. of where I am with the layout at present.
  3. At last I've managed to get some more track laid. Things have been on hold lately due to the weather and the fact my other half worked out that if I had all that spare time to work on my model railway, I would have time to decorate the house. Not sure if I'll get much more done this year now,so things may be delayed until the spring. Will post some more pictures once I have a minute.
  4. Now that we've had a lull in the rain I've managed to make a start to phase two of the layout and have the boards laid and varnished. A station should be arriving at Whinny Hill shortly (weather permitting) photos to follow.
  5. Sounds good to me, but you're making me hungry now lol
  6. Hi Mick, unfortunately this weather has meant that everything has had to be put on hold meantime. The railway itself, although being completely soaked over the past month or so is holding up well, thank god. My expansion plans, a station section and additional loop, I'm afraid are on hold until I can get outside to start building again. Roll on the summer lol.
  7. Here are the pictures of the Forth Rail Bridge that I promised:
  8. Here is some pictures of the view from my house, looking over the river forth. There is a bit of a haze over the water today otherwise you might have been able to see Edinburgh on the far shore. If I get time I'll walk down to the forth bridge and take some photos of that later on.
  9. The sun came out and so did my trains. Here is some pictures for you all, hope you like them? My layout is not very big but it's a start.
  10. I'm a newby here compared with these guys that have been at this stuff for years and have just built my first outdoor layout, which I had up and running today for the first time. My choice of controller is the Hornby elite which I up graded from the select for the following reasons: I chose the elite as you can still purchase one for around £160 new and being new to this hobby didn't want to fork out a large sum of money on some of the more advanced stuff until I had found my feet. The Hornby elite may have 4 amps of power but one of those amps is used for controlling accessories leaving 3 amps for your trains. With a dcc system even locos. that are not being used but are on the lines use a small amount of power to feed the chips, plus if you have coaches with lights they also draw on the available power. The elite also offered me something the select didn't have and that was the ability to reset and programme the chips especially on my sound locos, I was also able to use more functions that were not available with the select such as guards whistles etc. Hope this is of some help to you and good luck with whatever you decide upon.
  11. I can now announce that Whinny hill is up and running. The power was connected today and I have successfully run all of my locomotives around the circuit before rain stopped play. As soon as we get some decent weather I'll get some photographs for the forum to see. Now I'll need to work out how to improve what I have.
  12. Aye, this weather is just unbelievable for this time of year Chris, have been doing more soldering today and hope to get out tomorrow, would probably have been finished by now if we had some decent weather
  13. Not yet traingeekboy, went outside after work tonight to piece some track sections together but have had to come in as the wind chill is going right through me, roll on the summer. I'm dying to get it up and running, just the outer circle to complete then connect up the power. If the weather is reasonable this weekend I just might get it going. Fingers crossed!
  14. At last it's starting to take shape. a lot more work involved building this than I ever anticipated. lol
  15. Only good thing about this weather is it's let me crack on with soldering link wires between my tracks ready to go outdoors once the sun comes out again.
  16. That sounds like a good idea Roy, think I'll give it a try and appreciate the advice on the controller, to be honest it's something that I hadn't even considered. Many thanks, Bill
  17. Thanks for the advice Ian; so how do you connect the power from the controller? Do you have some other kind of connector? I'm looking at connecting the power from the controller so as I can disconnect it when not in use. Have never done any of this before so appreciate any advice.
  18. How are you guys connecting your power supply to your track outdoors? I have the usual Hornby power track, is this suitable for outdoor use or should I be looking at a different kind of power connection?
  19. Started soldering link wires between some of my track sections today and have actually laid the first track pieces outside. This soldering takes a bit of getting used to, but seem to be getting better at it the more I do. This is after a small burn to the tip of one of my fingers and some melted sleepers and a few choice words but think I'm on the right track now (pardon the pun). I have looked at the post on soldering link wires to points but intend to use hornby points. Where is the best place to put the link wires and would one set do like the DCC clips on the top end? All advice appreciated
  20. Not much happening here at the moment. Have received delivery of my straight track sections but there is a hold up with my 4th radius curves from hornby, seemingly they have sent their whole stock over to India to fulfil a large order and left nothing for their UK customers, so waiting on my local stockist to get back to me on that one. Apart from that I'm ready to go have the soldering gun and solder ready so will probably start joining some track sections together while I wait for an improvement in the weather up here. It seems when I'm working the sun comes out and then when I'm off it decides to rain or blow a gale, such is life, role on the summer lol.
  21. Have just been giving the woodwork another coat of varnish and weather permitting will give it a final coat tomorrow. Haven't done any soldering yet still awaiting delivery of tracks and some solder. This is a picture of where I am at present.
  22. Hi Roy, totally agree with you, my priority is just to get up and running and have my trains going round the garden.
  23. Hi Mick, at the moment I only have 4 locos the original one that started me off in this hobby: a merchant navy clan line pullman, a class 25 diesel with sound that I purchased new, a class 55 deltic that I bought from e-bay and a jinty steam shunter. With finances being limited and at the moment being directed to getting the outdoor layout up and running I've not been able to purchase as many locos as I would have liked to, but hey this is going to be a long term hobby, so plenty of time to increase the fleet.
  24. Well, made it at last. After many months trying to work out what to do and how to do it, I'm one step further forward in that I have my base built in the back garden awaiting delivery of the tracks. My model railway will be called whinny hill after the area I live. It is totally fictitious but based on several things I have seen. Originally it was going to be based on the east coast main line that runs from the forth bridge through the field about 500 yards from where I live, but unfortunately space and finances meant that a compromise had to be reached. At present my layout is not going to be based on any particular era but will be a mix from the sixties to present day. The station section when built, will be based on Stirling railway station as they still use the old type semaphore signals so I'll be able to run trains from different eras. Although I've still much to learn and a long way to go, I don't believe I could have done it without the help of the forum members and no doubt I'll be pestering you all a bit more in the future as I progress. So many thanks to everyone for all the help and advice.
  25. Well, think it's time I moved from the planning thread over to the members garden railway section. I'm going to call my model railway Whinny Hill after the area I live, totally fictitious but based on several things I have seen.
