  3. Well that's it! Now I've finished the new path and the new patio building control ( our lass. Lol) has given the green light for planning and construction of my, I mean my son's, new toy! I've drawn up my plans and measured, surveyed and layed some stone ready to start assembling my baseboards ( well phase one of them anyway!). I've gone for 3/4 inch marine ply which has had 3 coats of creosote, 3 coats of bitumen and will be felt wrapped! Does this seem oK? Any advice gratefully recieved. Thanks in advance. Mark
  4. Bloody spell checker strikes again on the above!!!!!
  5. Thanks TGB. There's something really satisfying about seeing an engine run the you've repaired yourself don't you Think? I'm not going to buy any more untested tho s it may just be beginners luck!!!
  6. Hi Mick. Have you thought of upvc soffat board to form your arches? It's flexible, cheap, and if you put some clingfilm over it before you pour in your concrete mix that should help release it when the time comes to remove the moulding. Hope this helps. Mark
  7. Hi everyone. Thanks for the idea of trunking for platforms. I'm a newbie to all this and any help and advice is great fully received. I just thought I might mention a company called Toolstation. I'm in the building trade and have found Toolstation to be between one third and two thirds cheaper than Screwfix for exactly the same items. You don't need to be in the trade or have an account and if you spend more than a tenner you get free next day delivery. Hope this helps someone. Thanks. Mark
  8. I must apologise to anyone reading the above for all the grammar errors! Bloody iPad I'm using just seems to change random words!!
  9. I recently got into model railways as something I could do with my 5 year old after taking him to the national railway museum and him developing a keen interest in trains. I bought an old lima shunter from eBay untested and jobs upraised it didn't run at all! Despite my local model shop declaring it dead and unrepairable I thought I had nothing to lose by stripping it and having a go at repairing it myself. There are 2 carbon bushes which attach to the motor which in turn are held in with 2 springs. One e of the springs was absent and not being able to find a replacevent I had an idea!! I removed the one remaining spring and measured it's length. I then cut the spring in half and then stretched both of the halves to the same length as the original one spring. I was amazed to find my repair had worked and my dead train now runs perfectly!!! Just thought I'd share this as it may be useful to someone in the same position.
