  1. Hi Grockle, you talked about your water tender on your Flying Scott being powered, how did you connect the wires from the water tender to the tender of the Flying Scott. I think it was Hornby that did bring out a blue and grey colour water tender with Flying Scotsman Enterpriser's on the side of it. You sure have a very nice collection of trains there is that all of them, I am just getting back into collecting British trains and happy that I have got my Flying Scotsman running again, have ordered 8 of those your model railway village coaches in part one three have arrived already waiting on five more to arrive and bought a 12wheel maroon Hornby Restaurant car to go with them, will get a brake van down the track.
  2. HI Robert, How is the progress of you outdoor layout going, a pity with your dog you have to build up high, don't own a dog, be nice to get one though, have enough to handle looking after our disabled son which is in a electric wheel chair and why I can't have my outdoor layout permanently set up, be nice, have designed the layout on a module system even the Tehachapi loop is in sections. No way I would be bending down on my knees and laying the track and doing the wiring, all the work gets done on two saw horses going to buy a third one so it will be easier working on two modules together, the cut curves will be done the same way too. And when it comes to the module track joins will be bolted together, track lined up and cut at the join sections. What do you actually model in the way of trains, I am just starting to get into Union Pacific freight trains. Tony from QLD Australia.
  3. I am finely away on the second module to the station complex, all the track and points are in now and shifted them forward so the points heading into the platforms are on that one model, I still need to add two points so the Indian Pacific can access the left hand track onto the main line, 5 more modules to go, haven't decided if I will motorise them or not, will leave that till later. I just put in the ply as mock-up platforms to show where the platforms are going, there is another double platform going on the left side of the module too and another module will be joining in there too being part of the main line. At the moment there are 20 points, need another seven points to complete the station track complex. Here is a you tube video of Sydney central station with the Indian Pacific coming into platforms two and three, when it is peak times the train consists is 26 cars long plus the auto carrier and two locos, my IP has 16 passenger car and two locos. Will also be modelling the auto carrier siding. Have seen some other you tube on Sydney Central with the Indian pacific which got me motivated into modelling Sydney Central, if you do a search on Google Earth you will see the amount of points involved and cross overs, my platforms are to the right HO scale length to fit all the 16 passenger cars of the IP in off peak times platform one.
  4. Hi IanR, how are you going with that point motor project, saw it on Outdoor points post, always looking at different ideas of switching points, wonder if you can have working light signals too from them. Found an Aussie seller that sells them if they are the same thing , a couple of dollars dearer though, fee postage helps from Melbourne, seen some sellers with four packs a couple of the units have five wires coming out of them, would be the way to go, knowing how to wire them up to power with the extra wires By the look at it this seller doesn't have any brackets that come with it. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-Auto-Locking-System-2-Wire-Single-Gun-Type-Central-Door-Lock-Actuator-Motor-/251413345611?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a8967354b" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
  5. Hi Robert, welcome to the forum, those are awesome curves you are constructing there , and from what I have seen from your pics so far you have a flat back yard, what I lack, going to be some layout when finely finished. Like the idea what you are using for the frame work PVC lattice, my layout is at ground level, have had a train fall off the old module layout years back, luckily it was only the wagons and not the two locos, I have only just started out this year in constructing a HO scale garden railway too, most of the layout will be under the pergola will be interested in your progress, I model Australian American and some British trains, modelling the Tehachapi loop.
  6. Griff, that is an awesome O scale layout indoor and out, money must of been no been no object and he had all the time in the word to build that Swiss layout. I am on budget also and only interested in running trains on the layout will be a big challenge in its self, but I have a you tube video that will blow you away and what I want to achieve on the layout with the station complex modelling Sydney Central, apart from the Tehachapi loop is where I will be putting most of my effort, always have wanted to do the same running too with the shunting. Will have the auto carrier siding also. What you saw was the Indian Pacific consist at peak times, they run 26 passenger cars with two locos up front to get over the Blue Mountains, quiet times is only 16 passenger cars which is the size of my train . The train has to be split up using two platforms all that fun in shunting. Once the train gets to Broken Hill it's all flat going and only need one loco especially after Adelaide on the Nullabor Plains to Perth, at trip I would love to do three days of pure magic. There is more Aussie trains on the link for you too look at enjoy. Tony
  7. Hi Rossie, the water canal is awesome what stuff are you using to model the water, I have seen in some British pics rail and canals working together. In with all those kits you got from Your model railway village did you get the church, if so what part of the series is it in . Saw a doco called Walking Through History with Tony Robison and the episode had church like the kit one,it was the tower of the church that looked the same, different bike though. One of the TV mobs over here called SBS shows a lot of BBC doco's., I liked Time Team, but that was on our ABC network. Took my first lot of the coaches from that series and ran them on my friends layout with no problems, can't wait to get the other 5 on order, Flying Scotsman is up and running again got something to pull the coaches till I get a British diesel loco, not sure on what class to get though, would like a 37 class or possible Deltaic class diesel will fit that era
  8. Roy, on a high the Flying Scotsman is up and running now, was driving my friend nuts he was about to say throw the loco in the scrap heap till he decided to check the tender pin and tightened it up and bingo worked, has some weight in the boiler too now A pity, his has DCC on his layout so I couldn't run 4472, but did try out the new 3 coaches from Your model railway village and the Hornby restaurant car an well behind a 37 class loco, will see how much birthday money I get for my birthday if I can buy two new locos one a British loco and new NR for m Austrains, will have to quick there .
  9. Hi Ian, The big question is how did you wire up your powered water tender to work with other locos, the only way would of had to add brass pick ups to the centre wheels on the tender my friend yesterday was telling me he knew someone that did that with the motor in the tender, will look into that, the other way is to run wires through to the front tender motor. Happy I now got my flying Scotsman running again had an issue with the pin on the tender was lose and was shorting out, was driving me nuts and the same with my friend till he decided to check the pin, bingo worked, he put some weight in the boiler chassis too. Haven't been though all your layout posts but from what I have seen is pure awesome, haven't come across any video clips, nice to see them running on your layout, notices in a pic you have a model of the Britain's answer to their first tilt train and what a shame it never got off the ground , be hard to get hold of now .
  10. Thanks Mick, Got a lot more work a head on the station complex track and points, back into the next module tomorrow, going to get those modules out the way and then move back to the Tehachapi loop project. Yeah, we have had a lot of trouble with the extreme summer heat in South East QLD, cooking the sola panels on two weather stations, that inside unit you saw was of the first unit, didn't know at the time all I could of done was replace the rechargeable batteries with normal double a batteries, kept that inside unit because it worked with the second one we have now. The same happened with this outside solar panel unit got cooked with last summers heart on that real hot day we had 48 degrees still at 4pm in the afternoon, lost a few plants in the garden also that day I decided to change the batteries and to my surprise it worked and now when it rains all day we don't lose the outside unit. Those Hornby 12 wheel Pullman coaches are awesome, would love a set of them but are pretty expensive to buy over here, how many are on a train, I knew someone that had 6 of them.
  11. Been busy yesterday replacing the three way with a double slip cross over and moving the three way back further, sure is a big improvement. Now to finish off the next module and join them up and so on, 7 modules all up. The main line has three though track so a freight train can pass through on the centre track, which has the double slip cross over on it . The track the two trains are on heads to an island platform, on the through traffic there is four platforms and four platforms on the terminus track, the gray roof coaches are those Your Model Railway Village and second one from the front of the pic is the Hornby Restaurant car.
  12. Roy, thanks I wonder if that is the trouble I am having with the contacts are shorting out, ringing a friend that lives not far from me and he models British trains, knows a fair bit about them, hopefully sort the problem out. Did discover that the Hornby's new A/4 class steam locos are now coming out with the plugs between the loco and tender, far better idea, still may go that way. I only run DC, all that work with plastic track joiners and bus block wiring , plan to have four throttles, two are remote throttles and other two walk around ,would love to switch to DCC, maybe one day. Got some more pics to post on my page , finished yesterday changing over the double slip cross over and mover the three way back further, looks heaps better.
  13. Here is the latest pic of my Hornby 12 wheel Restaurant car, slightly darker that the maroon coaches from your model railway village, be pretty awesome when the other 5 on order arrive should be any day now. Haven't decided on what British diesel loco to buy, will see how much birthday money I get at the end of June. Still going a head with fixing up the pickup issue with the Flying Scotsman between the tender and drive wheels on the boiler, going to replace that with permanent jumper wires like Bachman do their tender driver steamies and the same with the water tender which will have a motor in it too.
  14. Thanks Roy, It took some time, put the pic in the wrong folder, good to have a cartoon pic of myself, holding the soldering iron You were right about the pic size even though it was already small I had to modify it smaller to fit and yes that red printing came up saying the pic was too big. I have windows 8 on my laptop which is a pain as I can't connect to the printer to print and pics as my sons gaming computer is windows 7 and the so is the printer, I send pics through his email and print the pics that way, far easier than having to use a USB stick. Took some time to get around windows 8 and finding the desk top,
  15. Hi Roy, I am Tony from Ipswich QLD and it sure does get hot up here, those last days of summer it peaked 48 degrees and melted the solar panel on the digital out door weather station, I have to do away with the sola panel and replace the reachable batteries with normal batteries, at least we don't have trouble when it rains and lose signal from the outside unit. When I nail the fexie track down I nail every 12 sleepers and down have any problems with the track buckling even when I store the layout in the garden shed and it gets hot in there, same with the points, but I do put a tarp on each module that have all the points are on. My layout isn't a permanent one like everyone else's, is designed like a module layout, have 7 modules for the main station area and the rest of the layout curves are cut in sections, you would of seen on my layout pages on Camdle which should really be Camdale spelt the name wrong and would add a pic like you have done with your car, how do you do it. I like the way you are covering the track with those boards, will have to keep at a distance when opening them for any snakes hiding in there, we have big issues with brown snakes too, be awesome when you run your first train around the whole layout. got some issues with my Hornby Flying Scott, between the boiler and tender, thinking about doing away with the way Hornby have the pick ups on the connector bar, also looking at modifying a second tender as a water tender but be powered, give that extra power when going up the spiral and grades.
  16. Thanks Roy, I checked out Bunning for those Hebel blocks while the car was in Toyota this afternoon, the lady said you can use a knife to carve the block, be a good project if I modelled the Tehachapi loop hill. will have to go to a bigger Bunning to get the Hebel blocks at different sizes , they are on Bunning web site, my Bunning only has one size.
  17. Hi Chris, I agree what Mick and Griff are saying about the wonderfully feeling it is when the first train runs around the layout with out any problems, great stuff. Is that yellow diesel loco a 73 class saw the same one in the hobby shop on the way home from my train club yesterday, should of had a closer look at it, did some research on the net an if it's the same class it actually pulls a track testing train and the coaches are yellow, found a link, if you are interested will post on your next post. If you can't buy those coaches and wagons be a good scratching building project. Haven't decided on what class diesel loco to buy to go with the 8 coaches I bought from the your model railway village, do have a Flying Scotsman 4472 steamy, planning to modify a second powered tender as a water tender to give some more grunt, have to work out how I am going to connect the wires to the other tender .
  18. Thanks Griff, I have gone the same way Mick has with his station platforms in a shed but my station platforms is under a pergola at the back of the house, looking at making the sections in such a way I can link them up in under the pergola so I can run trains if it is raining. Have always dreamed of modelling Sydney Central and the Tehachapi loop for ages, now I am. Here I have a couple of pics of the last module layout I built, 35 feet by 16 feet, on two levels, the big shift to garden railway was the leg issue of the module layout, all the legs had to be adjustable because of the floor now being level. Was taking too long In figuring out how to bolt them to the modules and setting the layout up on my own, made the mistake f having 7 foot modules too heavy. Bought the Peco double slip cross over today, get stuck in pulling up the three way point and moving it back to replace three single points, going to be good when finished will also drill the holes for the point motors or what ever I use to switch the points.
  19. I got three of the coaches from from your model railway village today, very nice coaches, got a bit of weight in the too, can you take the roof of, I would like to add seating in them. Be looking forward to be getting the other 5 cars and the restaurant car coming from Britain. Bought that Peco double slip cross over today too, got 10 percent knocked off the price, usually cost $74, I got it for $66, not bad, now the big job to swap the three way point for the cross over and move the three way down to replace two single points. top job with that village, I reckon the real tree trunks blend in with the scene and I agree what Griff said about the over size grass matting looks like a field of crops, modellers over here in Australia do the same idea, nice affect, well done be looking forward to what you have planned with those your model railway village kits, do you have the in that lot.
  20. Griff, I just realised that I have been spelling your name wrong , sorry about that. Your curved platforms look pretty good, that roofing stuff you use for ballast, can't seem to get it over here in Australia, a shame because it does look like proper ballast. Hope to buy that Peco double slip cross over tomorrow as I want to replace the three way point and move that point further back to replace two other single points, all up need 25 points for the station track and main line on those modules, already got 18 points nailed down, only need to buy a few more to complete the station track. I am building the layout on a budget and have to use the ply from the old layout plus the points and track before I buy any new stuff, decided to make a start on the modules because there are 7 modules involved with the station platforms and entrance track. Except for the double slip cross over. Looks like I have finely got the smilies sorted out. bingo.
  21. Mick that is going to be awesome when you complete your layout at last and trains finely running over your viaduct , how long do you reckon it will you for that to happen. I have been busy too nailing down track and points on my station modules, all up I will need 25 points, have most of them, 18 points are already down, some I will have to buy, not going to motorise the points as yet till I replace the three way point with double sip cross over, pretty expensive item, around $70, you can see my progress on my posts. The weather is perfect here at the moment should be colder than what it is coming into winter months after this weekend, no one is wear jumpers, a bit nippy early morning, warms up pretty quick, non of the shops have been selling winter clothes as yet. I am looking at hooking up two powered tenders to the flying Scott, can it be done. When the Flying Scott visited American they bought over a water tender also, that's how I got my idea from, will you need to run wires through to the other tender, all I have to do is modify the second tender.
  22. Hi Roy, many thanks for the kind words, it is great to hear from Aussie modellers that are modelling the same railway. Yeah I have had that Ryobi drill for a while now , got the torch to go with it, love it because the batteries last quite a while bwing18 volts and you can quick charge any time, shouted my self a Ryobi chain saw too, mind you it took three goes before I got a good saw, first two were shockers, one wouldn't start and other one had a fault in the motor. Finished off the points today put in those plastic track joiners for the blokes, still have to fix up the furthest point and track on the right side of the module, want to straight the curve track up a lot more than is now. Those four blue coaches represent two suburban trains as I will have suburban island platform on the layout, would love to have a set of Sydney's double deck trains, pure awesome. The spur track you can see is for when I am running the Ghan train and modelling Darwin station, the spur is for the two NR Ghan locos so they can get refuelled heading back to Adelaide.
  23. Got some more track and point nailed down today on the second module, but have found I will have to shift two points where the three way point is. In pic one where the point is on its own I will be putting two points one being a wye point, so when the Indian Pacific is coming back out of left track it can go onto the right track, that is the fist two tracks on the left of pic one. Gong to be good when I finely run the first train, will be doing a video clip of the big event too.
  24. Gee I thought I was building a huge layout, it is nothing compared to everyone else's 54ft long 30 wide, designed on the Tehachapi loop line. in California America, I have a second stage planned will go down the side of the house will make the layout wider. There is a 19ft road rail bridge planned in that section. My layout is based on single track operation with passing loops, will have three passing loops, if I ever extend the layout could add an extra passing loop and longer single same with the passing loops which is 28ft planned on this layout, nice to win the lotto.
  25. I am finely under way and got the whip out on the track gang and did some serous track and point laying today, ha, ha. It sure took some time to get that single slip cross over lined up right so the trains can glide through there nicely into the platforms, I could of got a second cross over to access the second set of platforms, but I wanted the tracks to be as close as possible to the way Sydney Central is on to tracks thee, four and five. The points on track three should be near the platform two and three, it would be too much wiring and an extra small block just for a foot of track. The way I have the two modules set up while nailing the track down on saw stools is how I am going to do it on all of the modules, will be able to solder in place on the module joins the computer circuit copper boards to hold the track in place, no actual kneeing down doing it, same with the curved sections. I have got three sets of pics on how I mark out the big radius curves with my beam compass, used to use a tape measure before, this is a hell of a lot easier. with the other end of the beam compass on the painters trestle I made a better base to get the clamps out the way and I can move the base out on the size of the radius with ease.
