  1. Hi Fungus, if you go to IanR's post on in outdoor wiring on point motors, he explains on how he is using the auto locking door motor for switching point motors on outdoor layouts, Mick's idea is pretty good to the way he is installing those motors to the points. If you want to be on the cheap have a look at your local auto wreakers , worth a look. Here is IanR's post link, go to page two. http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=84
  2. Hi David, welcome to the forum, what part of the world do you live as it depends on how hot your summers and how cold your winters are, I live in Queensland Australia our summers are very hot , last summer peaked 48C degrees and our winters drop down to minus 3 degrees, August is at the end of our winter and the days are starting to warm up, spring not far away, back into my layout. Peco nickel sliver track is the best track to use for outdoors, that Hornby track must be steel track for it to go that way so quick, ok as you said will be a temporarily set up, my layout isn't going to be a permanent set up either, set up as a module outdoor layout, wont have those issues you can go to my post on Camdale layout and have a look how mine is coming together slowly. There isn't anything I know you can put on the rails to stop that rust build up just have to clean the rails with a track rubber every time you run a train even with Peco nickel silver track you have to keep the track clean and same with the loco wheels and rolling stock. This is where everyone hangs out, so yes place to be, you sure will get a lot of advice here. Tony.
  3. Hi Robert, Thanks for that link on DCC WOW what a read, I just scrolled down checking the link and what it says is going back to NCE, so when the time comes looks like I will go in that path , my club is going NCE also, in any case who will ever be running 120 cabs on a home layout anyway even 63, the most friends I will have over is four, nice to have that capability. I will be aiming at buying decoders that will run both on Dc and DCC like my Bachman DD40AX DCC on board will be the challenge, all my NR class locos are DCC ready and a couple of my Union Pacific AC/4400 locos are also, the rest aren't, will have ask help from a couple of friends . Next week will see some progress on my Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module as I bought some Javis grass matting off a Queensland seller will arrive mid week, got two spring mix rolls and one brow mix roll, still far cheaper for the same stuff in one of the hobby shops in Brisbane. Got some advice on modelling single lane dirt roads using sand and the bloke helps him self been washed up sand into gutters from the road, no costs at all, even better there is a park at the back of us that a dirt road and a creek ,great way in keep the cost down. Looking at modelling the Tehachapi hill also and have it left as an ornament under the pergola. Tony.
  4. Hi Roy, finding out more and more on DCC, its the amps on the locos on how many you can have running at one time before adding a boaster AMP, I always thought especially with Digitrax could run 120 cabs with NCE following behind with 63 cabs, it is good then all I will need is the one 5 amp trannie to start off with, Lens can only run 31 cabs When the time does come I will have get hold of decoders that will run on both systems like my Bachman DD40AX 6900 with DCC on board does, will take some time change all my loco fleet over and four of my locos have duel motors in them. http://www.tonystrains.com/productcompare/offthecuff.htm Finely raining at last, not going to get the rain they say we are supposed to be getting, be back into the layout construction next week, buying three rolls of that Javis grass matting from a QLD eBay shop for the Tehachapi loop tunnel nine module, going to use either double sided tape or blue tack to glue down the matting on the sides of the of the cutting in case I have to get to the track wiring . How is your layout going any progress I have been active on the other forum you were on. Tony.
  5. Hi Robert and Ian, would love to run a Big Boy but the loco I have is plastic kit and the drive wheels don't turn fixed, yet all the other wheels do, a pity as I was planning to do what UP did with the big move of Big Boy 4014, a friend has the Athearn model BB 4014., one day, after UP's FEF 4-8-4 844 steamy has the same tender as big boy. Found a pic of both big boy 4023 and DD40AX 6900 in place, they built the park around the two locos, will take a pic of my two loco set up in the same way, going to part of my layout. Tony
  6. Hi Ian, Griff, the first link did work as it had a pic of Athearn's DD40 Demonstrator loco pic, no idea what happened and traincarhobbies turned up instead. http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=90&image_id=3019' alt='URL>'> I have been in contact with traincarhobbies, he actually models the DD35/B class loco, as my DD35/B loco project on his page also, worth having a look. EMD only built one DD440, didn't go off well a pity non of the DD35's were saved all scrapped. Robert that link is good has some Aussie steamy loco links. Tony.
  7. Hi Ian and Griff, good links especially the one on the Kennefick Park which will interest you as I am modelling the Kennefick park Nebraska with the Bachman DD40AX 6900 loco for as I can have a choice of running the DD40AX on either my layout or club layout, will be part of my layout display. "> " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Here is a you tube link to the Big Boy coming home and a lot more to check out. Up's Challenger FEF 4-8-4 844 is oil fired , both locos aren't running at the moment. Ian do you know Anthony Delaine-Smith as he did an article in Railway Modeller June 2012 on his outdoor layout, owns a bus company, lives in Lincolnshire Bourne. Tony
  8. Hi Robert, yeah I have heard of that saying too, you sure are right on the home stretch now, exciting time to look forward to seeing the first train complete the circuit , hopefully seeing those heavy rain clouds it has convinced the rain clouds to do something over here which is has. Have had our first rain for months, over half of Queensland is in drought and need the rain real bad, more promising rain coming in and a wet weekend coming up, one town in QLD, Mt Isa is pumping water in. Thanks hopefully my son is coming home from hospital tomorrow, gets to you that heavy drive from Ipswich to the other side of Brisbane in the morning and afternoon traffic drains you out, takes over an hour about 90k's one way. I went to my train club today and took some pics of some of my other locos in my collection, 4 of them I ran today, the other three are my Aussie locos, NR84 Southern Spirit and two NSW 80 class locos, they were the last Australian locos with the duel cabs and closed in loco shells, got them on my gallery . What's that other new post you are talking about Keep the good work up and the pics flying, take care Tony.
  9. Hi Ian, well I have finely finished putting the big boy kit together, quite happy with it except it is very hard trying to put on all those wheels on the light model, your Rivaroosi BB will be a lot easier with the weight of it putting it on the track, I am tossing if I should glue the loco to the track. Still have a bit of painting on the front of the boiler and add the decals, also thinking of hitting the loco with some wreathing pint to seal the decals. I have a DVD doc on Big Boy pulling yellow colour passenger cars, will get it out and find where eon the DVD and take a pic, a friend was telling me all three UP heritage steamy locos are out of service, FEF 4-8-4 844, Challenger and another steamy. I found out I had a couple of parts left over, can't even find on the parts drawing where they go, could you take a pic of your model you put together , thanks, will take a pic of the parts tomorrow. Yeah those UP gas turbines are a pretty big loco, only lasted a few years, I think Athearn bought them out, only see them every no and then on eBay. How did you go at the train fair Ian get those coaches., I am on the con for yet another loco, going to put a deposit on, not due till December 2014. NR18 with the newest Indian Pacific colour scheme and the station with the middle shunting track is what I am modelling on my station which is Sydney Central. Tony.
  10. Hi Robert, as I am typing away to you, you will getting up in an hour to get stuck into you layout, it is 8:15pm over my side of the world, yeah you can have check of another 8 pics I posted of the Big Boy Revel HO scale kit is finished at last not with out a few problems and two parts left over I can't find on the drawing plan. Set back on my projects because my son is in hospital , hopefully for only a week, and back in full force, all I need to do now is put on the decals on the big boy and paint the front where the smoke stack is, gee talk about a challenge putting all those wheels on the track is a challenge, with the model being so light. Be looking forward to seeing more progress of your layout. Tony
  11. Here are some pics of Boeing specialised wagons that freight other aircraft makes, 777 and 747
  12. Hi DVIR, thanks for the comments, what part of the UK do you live and what scale do you model, yes I plan to build a couple more of the 737's and 757 fuselage which was transported by rail in three sections, that will be the next project after this fuselage is finished. also working on Big Boy plastic kit in 87 scale going to be a display whit another loco DD40AX 6900. Also planning to scratch build the Boeing specialised wagons that make up the consist of the Being train, these days you only see a few fuselages on a freight train usually at the front . Yeah hate to think the costs of that derailment, those companies involved will be covered for that sort of thing happening , hopefully Boeing had a few spare fuselages to replace the ones lost. We over hers in Australia do still have broad gauge down in Victoria and south Australia, which at this moment is slowly been replaced by standard gauge, South Australia has three gauges not in main line use any more board, Standard and narrow gauge which we have in Queensland, there is stand gauge up to Brisbane, crazy the whole country should be one gauge. Here is the three fuselage sections of a Boeing 757 they stopped production in 2004 on the 757. will post more pics of the specialised wagons on the next post. Tony
  13. Hi fungus, Thanks I hope to buy some grass mats from Aussie eBay in QLD to finish off he Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module and I can move onto finishing off the whole spiral with track laid down too and be able to do a test loco, going to along while before the whole layout is finished. A friend at my train club was showing me Engine drive on his Samsung phone said it was a free APP. Like what Griff said too keeping the trains running while you are fixing that problem like the real railways do the same. Being busy working on other projects, being busy working going other project to do with model trains, 737 fuselage project and a Big Boy plastic kit model . That video was great , like to see more and the pics keep them coming. Tony
  14. Hi Robert, thanks for the kind words, interesting that you are having the questions on the post , how do you do it as a lot of the guys are doing the same, tried to change the colour front too and couldn't, was bad enough finely getting the pics posted . I am hopping to con my wife into buying that Jarvis grass matting from Aussie eBay, got a QLD seller I can get them from have the mats here in a couple of days, if I buy them today be pushing it to arrive on Friday be nice, then I can get stuck into finishing the TL tunnel nine module still need to buy a few trees also and model the dirt roads. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OO-Scale-Javis-Spring-Green-Grass-mat-1200mm-x-300mm-JMAT71S-JV135-/121179681694?pt=AU_Toys_Hobbies_Model_Railways&hash=item1c36df339e" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ope you can get stuck into doing more work on your layout be looking forward to seeing a train running around and the feeling to see it happen too, I will be along way off competing my circuit. Have posted some progress pics on my Revel big boy kit in my gallery, the loco does look like a loco now, boiler is sitting on the two drive wheel sets, will finish the kit off tomorrow glad to get it out the way and then start on the UP's Kennefick park diorama project with the DD40AX loco, that will be a big job, at least I am finely finishing of my model projects. Tony
  15. Hi Ian, gee your friend is lucky o have some spare parts form BB kit, I don't think I will have any spares, I even had to repair a broken pin on the front in under the boiler where those pin bars that support the boiler on the front drive wheel set, glad to get them out the way, fitting in the drive rods was a challenge. I love those E9 locos, do you have the E9/B loco to, look good with a rake of the UP coaches behind them, that would of being a site to see with 60 box cars behind one E9 loco, they must have, some grunt, you must be lucky to have any length train you put on you clubs layout, there is a 10ft train limit on my clubs layout. This will get ya going I set up my Indian Pacific coaches all 17 cars of them with one auto carrier and two NR class locos, a pity the club was a busy Saturday or other wise I wold of run the train also I have my rake of 9 Union Pacific coaches with my newsiest loco pulling the train pure awesome, Bachman Centennial DD40AX 6900 with DCC on board runs on DC also, so quiet and smooth. The pics ore on my Camdale layout post. Want to get some more of the UP heritage passenger cars to make up maybe 15 as down the track want to buy UP's FEF 4-8-4 steamy 844 to double head with my DD40AX 6936, on the wish list. Tony
  16. Hi Ian, here is a couple of pics of my Revel Big Boy kit project I am putting together going to be 4023, wasn't easy putting the boiler onto the front articulated wheel set with those three pins, will glue them in permanently as the wheel sets don't move. http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=90&image_id=2969&display=popup' alt='URL>'> http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=90&image_id=2970&display=popup' alt='URL>'> http://www.oogardenrailway.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=90&image_id=2971&display=popup' alt='URL>'> Looks like I didn't put the front bogies on the track right, there will be more pics to come , you can see the in behind the boiler. Tony.
  17. Hi Ian, I thought the big boy with those 107 freight cars would of got you going, pretty awesome, I am waiting for his return call on how many freight cars the big boy can pull on its own, saw one of his other video clips and his big boy was pulling 35 freight cars on its own, you did well then with 60, what about grades, that would of been a big test, will let you know when he rings me. He just rang me and said one big boy will pull those 107 freight cars on it's own the reason for two was the fact the spiral is pretty steep and two big boys were needed, I have trouble with 13 spine cars need three locos as they are pretty heavy, he also said depends on the freight car bogies what sort of wheels they are too. How do you change the typing front, I got the choice of colours up but can't change the front. Here is a you tube link on my Indian Pacific pulling into Sydney Central, they had to split the train so must of had 26 passenger cars, the Loco with the gold colour scheme there is a model of it coming out in December, I am hopping too con my with to put a deposit on it and pay the rest when it is due, $300. That is what got me into modelling Sydney Central for "> " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Here is a pic of Sydney Central from Google Earth the first platform is the Indian Pacific with 16 passenger cars, that was a fluke that pic have never seen any more of the Indian Pacific in platform one again, I am modelling the first five platforms and three of the suburban platforms. Tony.
  18. Hi Andrew, thanks for the comments, yeah 26 cars for the Indian Pacific is very long, we have two other famous passenger trains, the Ghan and Southern Spirit, the Ghan locos are red with the white Ghan with the camel logo on the side of the loco, the Southern Spirit has a two tone colour scheme, I have the two Ghan NR's and one Southern Spirit NR, will take some pics of them The first Ghan to Darwin pulled about 30 passenger cars a quarter mile long, the new line from Alice Springs Northern Territory and Darwin opened in 2004, starts from Adelaide, the Southern Spirit runs between Brisbane and Melbourne. I have a good you tube on the Indian Pacific pulling into Sydney Central and splitting the passenger cars and shunting the auto carrier to the loading dock with I will be modelling, that is what got me modelling Sydney Central for. Tony
  19. Hi Roy my train clubs second DCC layout does have NCE and the main layout will be changed to NCE too, didn't get much info from one member will have to wait till when I go in a Tuesday, wont be to September now. My new DCC loco ran perfect on DC in matter a fact ran better than straight DC, very smooth speeds , even the directional lights works and the same with the flasher unit, money well spent, looks like more conning my wife for more DCC locos on board. Uploaded 17 pics from the running day yesterday and set up my Indian Pacific just to take some pics,17 passenger cars, 1 auto carrier and two locos. Tony.
  20. Hi Ian, still having issues with mainly wheel pick-ups not touching the wheels as there is a fair it of movement from side to side on the wheels, that could be the problem , one problem buying secon hand locos from eBay, not going to give up, nearly there. I could run two jumper wires from the front tender till it is sorted out, easy way out I may buy a new replacement tender motor, problems with the other tender, may of stripped the gears, are they easy to replace , have a spare ender I can get them from or just swap the wheels over because that other tender has a bend a bent axle from being dropped from my friend. Here is that promised you tube link of another club members called Andrews military train and 107 freight wagons been pulled buy two big boys. "> " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; "> " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Tony
  21. Hi Robert, thanks my right eye is slowly improving every day, have to remember not to rub the eye so I wear an eye pad while in bed, amazing there was no blood while cutting the eye lens like that. I had a great day at my train club and posted 17 more pics onto my gallery, Camdale and Boeing posts , still haven't bought that grass matting, far too expensive in the hobby shop. will buy two colours one for the cutting entrance before tunnel 9. Had my 17 car Indian Pacific set up for a photo shoot too would liked to of ran the train around the layout but it was too busy yesterday, train limit size. Doing any work on your layout this weekend. Tony.
  22. Here is some more pics of my other NR class locos and pic of my Indian Pacific with 17 passenger cars, plus an auto carrier and two locos. This train took a long time to collect the coaches as some of them are pretty dear to buy, a couple of the dinners I want to modify to lounge cars, will longer windows, there is a couple on the Indian Pacific.
  23. Very happy with my latest loco ran her on my clubs layout in DC very impressed, thought I would have a few problems couldn't fault it, money well spent an was surprised that the directional lighting even worked on DC with the flashing light on the cab, of course I could switch the lights off on DCC, but no leave it, awesome, looks like I will be buying more Bachman locos with DCC on board. All I need to buy is Athearn's UP FEF 4-8-4 steamy 844 to double head with the DD40AX usually I run my Bachman DD40AX with running number 6936 with I numbered when I had a unpainted Bachman painted in UP colours.
  24. Have done some more work on the 737 fuselage project the ice breaker frame, why the metal frame was called name in front of the fuselage on the flat wagon. The white angle shaped container I=on the smaller flat wagon is for storage of the tail sections, that is only a mock-up container will be the proper one out of styrene. Still got a bit of fixing up on the frame and adding a few more parts before I paint it and will be glued permanently to the flat wagon, project is coming along slowly. Normally BNSF has the contract in pulling the Being trains, I didn't bring Didn't BRING ANY SF locos, before BN and SF became one SF pulled the Boeing trains so can get away with just SF locos, haven't got any BNSF locos as yet, will when I repaint a AC/4400 shell in BNSF colours.
  25. Hi Andrew , as promised, I put my Indian Pacific on my club's layout, a pity I couldn't run the train would of been awesome as my club has a length limit on the layout of 10 feet, my layout a different matter, I had 17 carriages one auto carrier plus the two locos, the station platforms on my layout is 15ft and will fit 16 coaches. [image]2963[/image] [image]2964[/image] [image]2968[/image] I am going to have to invest in a wide angel lens for my digital SLR camera does have has that fitting to fit other lenses, great for taking long train pics. If you go and have a look on my gallery I just posted 17 pics of todays club running day was pretty good, there is another few pics of my Union Pacific 10 car passenger train those coaches are pretty long 11 inches and my newest loco Bachman centennial DD40AX 6900 DCC on board, can also run on DC with no problems, pure awesome, more Bachman locos on the wish list. Tony.
