  1. Hi jonblakeney, what a big disappointment that Athearn has discontinued the big boy was going to buy one down the track but the closest I will get to one is Revel kit of the big boy and boy what challenge that was gluing together . I still have a fair bit more detailed paining to do and the decals to put before finishing, is planned from my diorama on Kennefick Park Nebraska, also bought Bachman's DD40AX 6900 which has DCC on board, does run well on DC too. Will be looking forward to seeing big boy 4014 running on your outdoor layout, UP has started pulling big boy 4014 down the big long rebuilding program. Tony.
  2. Finely at long last my Flying Scot running with the two powered tender drive tenders is now working together, but the only way was connecting the two tenders with wires, to hide them I painted them black to make out they are those air hoses, permanent connected together now. The big madden run will be tomorrow at my train club starting off with 8 and adding more, be pure awesome. Will look at replacing the Hornby couplers with close up couplers and now a project that is completed.
  3. Thanks Robert, still a lot of scenery work ahead to get the module to look the same or close to the real TL, wont be back to the module till next week, busy few days coming up ,fathers day on Sunday when is your fathers day, same date as ours over here. Have finely got the two tender drive tenders of the Flying scot running together, but not with the second tender running on it's own, to may issues with wheel pick ups, had to run wires from the other tender. Today I will be tiding the wires up and bought those small plugs so I can disconnect both tenders, heading to my train club tomorrow for the madden run at long last, will start off with 8 passenger coaches and build up to hopefully 11 coaches ,be awesome . Here is a great pic I found from the same bloke I got the permission to post his pics of the Tehachapi loop pics, the pic was taken at Taconite harbour Minnesota, worth a go even modelling in HO scale garden railway , a big challenge. Tony
  4. Hi Ian, over in England the surgeons must be way ahead of ours as I had the same hernia as yours and had to have two of those mesh mats in and was in hospital for four days, mine was caused by previous surgery on a ruptured stomach aneurysm. I am still here to tell the story had a 50, 50 chance surviving the surgery back in 2006, still have to face yet another stomach aneurysm surgery, specialist is keeping an eye on it. My Aunty had a key hole on her hernia and took quite a while to get over it and yes she had those mesh mat put in too, like to know how they did it, maybe why she was in a lot of pain for, rather face the other way. What's the law over your way of driving after surgery, can't drive for a month over here on big surgery's. ,like hernia's. Tiding the wires on the two FS tender drives today, will take some pics close up mainly of that other wire I was talking about, going to my train club tomorrow for the madden run off both tender drives, will start off with 8 passenger cars first and build up. Best of luck with your surgery Ian and have a quick recovery. Tony from Australia.
  5. Hi Ian, not good you have to face the surgeons knife, what sort of hernia is it, I had a double hernia when I was 16, very painful, ok when the doc gave me an injection to kill the pain, some hernia's don't have much pain at all, amazing what surgeons are doing these days with day surgery. Hope the surgery goes well for and you will be out of commission for a short while, depends if the surgery is keyhole or not, keyhole the recovery is much quicker. Yeah good feeling to see both tenders working together a shame I can't get the second tender working independently, here is a couple of pics on how I am going to hide the wires, bought the mini two wire computer plugs, be easy to hide in under the tender. I have a couple of friends I can fall back on also, go for it if the seller is doing the wrong thing, I had trouble with a train shop a few years back also, it took over twelve months to get a replacement NR class loco, wasn't the one I bought in the first place, had to take what he had, ended up with a NR class Sothern Spirit logo loco. Back into working on the layout Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module, latest pics in my post. Tony.
  6. Hi Ian, some breaking news I have finely got both of Hornby's Flying Scot's tender drive tenders going but the second tender isn't running in its own right, jump wiring from the front tender even that was a challenge, had to resolder the feeder wires to the brass pick ups on the wheels and the jump wire wired had to soldered operate to each other. But when I resoldering the wires noticed a black wire soldered in behind the brass pick ups at the top where you soldered your white wire in maybe that is why it isn't working and shorting, will take a pic tomorrow and decided if I should cut it or leave it the way I have done the wiring and hide the wires by painting them black as air hoses. How is your house reconstruction going finished now. Tony.
  7. I am finding it hard to get a good aerial pic of the Tehachapi loop, till I decided to look at you tube , well say no more have found a couple of very good you tube aerial video on what I want to achieve on my TL spiral, all I have to is pause the video and take a pic od the screen, mind blowing what is out there when you type in the right search words. It is amazing with the technology that is out there with the HD video camcorders coming out now to fit into a drone, on the wish list to get an I/pad controlled drone, pure awesome.
  8. Hi Robert, well done you achieved the milestone of completing the bench work with the final small section, now the hardest part cutting the track bed and that roofing felt, nailing down the track and bus wiring , never ending, yet another HO scale garden railway getting closer to competition. I had a go of doing some ballast on the Tehachapi loop module on Saturday, turned out quite well, pretty lose to the colour of that roofing felt, I used that crushed concrete that is used for paver beds and sprayed it with light gray primer, put white glue down first, pics on my post. See what tomorrow brings as I bought some plaster ready to start on the slope falling off the dirt road on the left side of the module, have painted the tunnel mouths also, it will be Christmas before I see any trains running, in between the layout I want to do some woodturning got my own lathe. Tony.
  9. Griff, thanks yeah all ready to go to tackle the dirt road, lucky it is only a width for one car, makes it easier, I may have to go to the landscaper mob to get some brown sand for the road base, waiting for Mick to check if the pics I want to post haven't got any copy right on them they are aerial pics of Tehachapi loop. Are you still busy with work not being able to get back to your layout, you will. Sorting out the Hornby Flying Scot's second power drive tender tomorrow, hoping to get to the train club on Saturday, be great to be running both Flying Scot tenders running together with 11 passenger cars behind it.
  10. Hi Roy is that what the tunnel ends are called tunnel mouths, I have finely got stuck back into finishing off the Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module, still more work a head, quite happy with the way the tunnel mouths came up, had to paster them as the screws stood out like a sore thumb. Not all that happy with the Javis grass mating all the stuff is coming off will have to get more of the grass sprinkle stuff and wasn't easy to put on but at least the way I have glued the matting on can come of with easy, used that paper tape, will see how it turn out once I add the stuff you use for small bushes and weeds, posted the pics the progress pics o my post. OH well I wont need to send that link of the bloke you are taking about, funny that I found his link on looking for that adhesive, wonder if you can use it on bird baths, thanks to a cat next door, it jumped up trying to get the lorikeets while they were having a bath and broke it, I had to turn the base stand around to give it a new lease of life, you guessed he did it again, we have all sorts of native birds come in or a bath in clouding King parrots. A pity he models 0 gauge wonder if we can get him to join the forum. With that pic you took I saw a post with the bracket on are you planning to extend the layout, between the fence and garden shed, looking good. Tony
  11. More up date on todays work on TL's tunnel 9 module scenery . Quite happy with the way the tunnel ends have turned out, what's the right word for the tunnel ends I always thought they are called tunnel portals. Once I have finished putting the grass matts on looking at lightly spraying clear sealing spray the mats to stop the grass stuff coming off. Tony
  12. What a perfect day to end winter and to get back into the layout construction I had the ballast gang and landscapers working together the ballast took the longest to do and will use the same technique on the dirt roads using the same crushed concrete. What I did what put on white glue and sprinkled the only then blew off the access and sprayed with gray paint, the dark crushed concrete darked the gray paint turned out well, still do want to ballast the track, very happy with the out come. The way I did the ballast it may be too dark so if so could anyone let me know, I am thinking of using sand for the dirt roads as they are a lighter colour in the real pic. Had to do that before I gluesdthe Javis grass matting on, looks like I may have to build the dirt road up going by the Tehachapi loop pics on tunnel 9 to give a slope from the road to the tunnel, will need more plaster, still a lot of work ahead to finish the module. It was difficult to glue the grass matting on the sides with the spiral going down on a angle an the start of the curve. Here is a pic of the Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 I want to achieve, more to come next post. Tony
  13. Hi Robert, what some people go to express their thoughts on the net, there is a site I have seen in the past with a lot of that stuff on it. That temp here is about is 46c degrees to ours , damn hot, last summer it went over that 48c degrees, hope we are not going to jump straight into a long summer, first couple of days of spring going o be 29 degrees, but still cool at night 5 degrees, nice to cuddle into my warm wife. Thanks for the kind words roddy, my eye surgery went well, had my eye lens replaced classed as cataract surgery, when I go back to the eye clinic at the hospital I will find out when I have to have that laser surgery, eye sight in my right eye is improving an see much better with my reading glasses on couldn't before in that eye. Sprayed the two portal tunnels yesterday and the screws showed up like a sore thumb, had to end up plastering the whole portal tunnels to cover the screws, should of glued them on , cut them out of ply, save a few dollars. A mazing on how printing has come along now with 3D printing, I should of kept the link on a bloke printing out from a plan on the model plane and on another you tube link a bloke printed out all the parts to build a working automatic rifle mind blowing, what I need to speed up my construction on those 73 fuselages, need the win the lotto, $20,000++ and also need a 3D software programme. Happy modelling from Tony and take care.
  14. Hi Robert, yeah those sort of issues can take up a lot of time glad you have been able to do some of that wanted progress work on the layout construction frame work. you will start seeing some wanted progress on my layout at long last, have bought that Javis grass mats and going to the creek a couple of blocks away and getting some sand for the dirt roads, also going to add some timber under the TL tunnel 9 module to build it up so the spiral isn't blow the gravel level, sitting on top of the gravel, the pics are on my post and galley. Not far away is your autumn and it will be cooling down and coming into spring over here and those hot days, next week we are coping a hot day 29 degrees, hope we aren't going to jump right into a long summer and have present days. Have also finished putting the Big boy kit together, that was a challenge still need to do some detail painting and add the decals, b able to over onto UP's Kennefick park Nebraska diorama project, again these is progress pics in my galley. Thanks for that link Griff I got the Silver Streak movie out and was watching some of it on the lap top as I can't play region 1 on my blue-ray recorder, good movie. It was our turn yesterday as we copped a bad storm some the towns near Toowoomba coped bad hail and it was very blowy today winds up to 60K's an hour mainly around the coast which copped it bad. Here is a link I found looking for more pics on HO scale outdoor railway, enjoy, could you guys fill the earth quake in California up in Napa Valley, pretty big one. "> " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Happy modelling and take care too Tony...

  16. Hi Mick, I came across a pic of a viaduct in Pen-y-Bont UK but couldn't find it on Google earth, do you know anything about Pen-Y-bont as the viaduct is worth modelling, amazing what comes up what searching for something else, also wanted to measure the length of the viaduct to get the length of the arches. http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/uk/travel-special-2014-escape-the-bustle-of-london-on-a-rail-journey-to-penybont-9080425.html Tony
  17. The javis grass matts have arrived all ready to go to get back into the Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module , will see finely see some progress on the layout. Even with buying grass matt ready made it still makes a mess so I am looking into spraying the grass once it is all down with some clear seeling stuff.
  18. How is your outdoor layout progressing, I too have been doing some research on eBay and bought some Javis grass matting for my Tehachapi loop tunnel module, should arrive from Mareeba QLD today, got it for half the price to what I would of bought ii for in a hobby shop in Brisbane even their smaller pieces were the same price, pay to shop around. It is a perfect winters morning up here in SEQLD not a cloud in the sky need a track suit till later on, nice day peaking 23 degrees, back into the layout on Friday and Saturday will see some progress again, there is more rain coming in tomorrow, I plan to do some work in the back garden transplanting some plants, they haven't been doing to well with no rain this winter. You copped it worse that we did and more rain , Monday we had a wild windy day, wind up to 60K's an hour. I will have to buy some more 89ft flat wagons and 60ft ones for my 737 fuselage project, need at least five, building a 757 fuselage to go on three flat wagons, something different for a train load.
  19. Hi Roy, you sure are copping more of rain than what we got some areas more than other, all we got was 40mm's be ready there is more coming a band of rain coming in on Thursday staying for a lot longer , sure need as you say. Mixing that glue with rapid cement, what does that do make it set quicker and stronger. I was going through your post yesterday and came across a plant, looks like a Hydrangea , biggest I have every seen, can't grow them up here too hot and humid, great idea with the gazebo giving you some shade while working outside. Not many Mitre 10 stores, up my way will have check them out on line, my other hobby is wood turning and need a good strong glue to glue spindles on a wood blank that you are turning into a bowl or platter, I like turning pens, great gift got ten to turn for my Uncle's and Aunties, you buy the pens in kits, resin ones are the nicest, that is what the purple pen is resin, nice to turn. Had a bit left over if front of the pens, the pens a twist stile pen can get other stiles and different coloured resin blanks, I am after the ones that have the sparkle in them, about $8 a blank , thanks to the cheap Chinse ones hitting the market, not worth it trying to sell them. Tony
  20. Hi Ricky, love the way you are building your outdoor layout, you sure are lucky to have a flat back yard in the UK, I am not so lucky where live I in QLD Australia, rises up too steep, stuck to around the sides and back of the house, even still need a spiral to get up to the carport as the pergola isn't all flat either at the side of the house, a big challenge the fun in building garden railways. Like the lighting too, can you switch the lights off in the houses, with the streets lights still on, awesome. Be interesting how you are going to fasten the track to the pavers, what's the plans for your layout going around the whole back yard, keep the pics coming. Tony.
  21. Hi fungus, how is your tree route fix program going go it sorted out and trains running, be good to see the train fly over the viaduct past the rock cutting, can't go right out into my back garden as it is pretty steep, would need a few spirals to get up to the top garden, how about your yard, going buy your pics pretty flat.Have to keep to the back and sides of the house, may venture around the garden shed one day, need a few bridges there. Back into my layout construction this weekend, so long as the winds aren't too strong, we cop the westerly winds in August, and they are have that cool nip yesterday was pretty bad , 60K's an hour, where I live at times got up to that speed, winter is still hanging around, dropped down to 16C degrees. My layout going to be slow going to I get past the hard parts, Tehachapi loop and station modules, be good if I got some help.
  22. Hi Roy, how did you go with that Prep glue, had a look on the net and at the moment the closest place to get in here in QLD is in Southport Gold Coast, where did you buy it from, wonder if Bunning stock the glue. The big question is how do you judge the mixing of the wood glue with water and they say a drop of detergent , will be a first time for me, using sand for the dirt roads on the module,at least the roads aren't very wide. Bought some javis grass matting from a eBay seller in QLD arrives mid week, so I can finely get stuck into finishing the Tehachapi loop tunnel 9 module, planning to have a few trees also, then I can move onto finishing off the whole spiral loop and nail down the track and wiring, never ending. That's not a bad price $300, so you haven't got the 63 cab NCE DCC. Tony
  23. Hi Griff, I ended up buying three rolls of the Javis grass matting, two of the spring mix and one of the brown mix, got some help from the other forum FR from a bloke that uses free sand from the road gutter for his roads, recycled sand, got a creek a street back at the back of our house will go there next week and get some sand , pure magic. Will see some progress on my TL tunnel 9module next weekend finely finished, all I will need is some trees. The roll is 1200x305mm's, still far cheaper than buying the same stuff in a hoppy shop near the train club I go to in Brisbane. My big boy kit is finely put together now just need the decals and then to move onto the diorama Kennefick park project, pics on my post. Tony
  24. Here is a few pics of the beginning of Kennefick Park diorama , not sure if I have the right colour on the front of Big Boy's boiler where the smoke stack is, next step is the decals for the big boy. Looking forward to getting back to the layout next week. Tony
  25. Hi Robert, how did you go on Saturday get done what you planed to do, had to start again I accidently hit the red X square on top of the Explorer page while coping another link in my favourite links , have you done that too frustrating. What I do now is either preview the page or Submit and then go back and edit the page if I want to add more pics or links this time I forgot to do that. A big question how do you add the last Post question onto this post, I can't fin any where you add the question. You will start to finely see some progress on my TL tunnel 9 module as I finely bought that javis grass mats, got two colours two of the spring mix and one brown mix pic re on my post, found an eBay seller in Queensland, parcel will arrive mid-week. The rain has gone and it's a nice sunny day, got 40mm of rain got start for spring just around the corner, so I can get stuck into finishing painting the big boy so I can put the decals on, then can move onto UP's Kennefick park Nebraska diorama. Can see yet another project on the list, the Silver Streak train, got the carriages just need two F/7 locos will have to repaint them. http://eri397.wix.com/kalinski#!mehano-f7a---f7a/zoom/c1qi6/image1j7p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Pics of the actual train is hard to come by, luckily I have the movie on Silver Streak, got another friend that is modelling the train too from America, another good train movie is the Unstoppable. Looking forward to seeing some progress pics. Tony.
